We are looking for a solid reliable rock-steady stable hand for our two sweet gentle horses and adorable donkey. They live on our property with us, but we frequently travel and have busy work schedules.
Our horses are basically our pets, one is a 20 year old Quarter Horse that likes to nuzzle and give kisses (he really likes ATTENTION, and he is a tough guy, so he needs to respect you). The other is a rescued donkey who is about 6 years old, he also needs LOVE and ATTENTION. (daily hugs required for real or he will not eat). We just recently added a new rescue horse to our growing family.
We are looking for part time weekend hours with the occasional 7am-12pm and 3pm to 7pm shifts or later depending on what you coordinate with the stable manager throughout the week. We are in Paradise Valley near the Hermosa Inn (near 32nd Street and Stanford), hopefully you live nearby.
Primary responsibilities include general upkeep of our small 3-horse stable and arena, but most importantly keeping our horses happy.
Daily duties...
- Walking horses
- Grooming
- Feeding
- Mucking stables, arena, and property
- Administering meds as needed
- Light training (donkey hates trailers, needs trailer training)
- Dragging and watering arena
- Other…
You will mostly be working alone, so daily chores are your responsibility with no supervision. There is upkeep and groundskeeping work needed for the arena & property (minor landscaping involved) and the riding trail (small trail that loops around our 2 acre lot), ground squirrels dig holes that need filling constantly. Our horses are our kids, we spoil them, and want you to do the same!
Ideally you have at least 3 years handling experience with horses; inherent love for animals; patience and compassion; great physical ability (capable of lifting 50 pounds). You must have your own reliable transportation so that you can come and go as needed.
We can be flexible with scheduling but generally need someone during the mornings through afternoons when we are in town (when we are out of town, more help required). What is super important to us is that you are extremely dependable, well organized, a clean freak, gentle with horses, truly knowledgeable about horses and are the type of person that passionately connects with them and absolutely loves them.
You will be responsible for coordinating your shifts with the Stable Manager to ensure everyone is always taking care of the horses. We also travel frequently and during those times you will be responsible for making sure they are even more looked after (IDEALLY, you do not live too far from our little ranch in Paradise Valley because that would make this easier for night feeding and in case of night emergency).
PLEASE READ BEFORE APPLYING: ATTENTION to details KEY! It is a small stable, but we need to keep it exceptionally clean and organized. You will be responsible for managing any upgrades needed or repairs to the stable, and the general upkeep of the facility.
Also, we need someone who is 10,000% dependable. You cannot neglect our horses; they are our kids. We need someone who is TRULY DEPENDABLE!
Please note this is a local job in Arizona and we will only interview people who already live in Arizona. We prefer people who already live here because they are familiar with the climate and horse living conditions. From June – August, you will have reduced hours because they go up to Camp Verde to avoid the heat.
