Full Job Description

Field Surveyor / Construction Layout Technician

Position Summary

Iron Horse Companies is seeking an experienced Field Surveyor/ Construction Layout Technician to support our commercial plumbing and mechanical construction projects. This position will be responsible for providing accurate field layout, point placement, and dimensional verification throughout various phases of construction, including underground, top-out, and finish work.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with Total Stations and construction layout equipment, strong blueprint-reading skills, and the ability to work closely with Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, and field crews. Commercial plumbing or mechanical construction experience is a strong plus.

Key Responsibilities

Perform field layout and point placement for commercial plumbing and mechanical construction projects.
Establish and verify points, elevations, dimensions, and locations using Trimble, Hilti, or similar Total Station equipment.
Assist Foremen and Superintendents with layout requirements during underground, top-out, and finish phases.
Interpret and work from construction drawings, blueprints, plans, specifications, and BIM models.
Verify field conditions and dimensions to ensure layouts accurately reflect project drawings and design requirements.
Identify discrepancies between field conditions and construction documents and communicate them to the appropriate project team.
Perform quality-control checks on completed layouts and installations.
Assist field personnel with layout questions and provide technical guidance when necessary.
Maintain accurate field notes, measurements, and documentation.
Work efficiently across multiple active projects and prioritize layout needs based on project schedules.
Maintain surveying and layout equipment and ensure equipment is properly calibrated and cared for.
Follow all company, project, and OSHA safety requirements.
Attend required company, department, project, and contractor meetings or training.
Maintain professional conduct while on jobsites, in company facilities, and while operating company vehicles.
Perform other duties as assigned by Field Operations or Project Management.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required.
2+ years of construction surveying, field layout, or similar experience.
1+ years of hands-on Total Station experience.
Experience with Trimble, Hilti, or comparable construction layout equipment.
Strong ability to read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, specifications, and plans.
Strong mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to identify and communicate field conflicts or discrepancies.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while meeting project deadlines.
Ability to work effectively with Foremen, Superintendents, Project Managers, and field crews.
Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

Commercial plumbing or mechanical construction experience.
Experience with new commercial construction, tenant improvements, and remodels.
Experience working on hotels, multifamily, student housing, assisted living, healthcare, or other large commercial projects.
Experience with CAD, BIM, Revit, or construction layout software.
Experience working with BIM/VDC models and digital construction drawings.
Experience with Procore or similar construction management software.
Previous experience supporting underground, top-out, and finish plumbing/mechanical installations.

Physical Requirements

Ability to walk, stand, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, and work on active construction sites for extended periods.
Ability to work outdoors and in varying weather conditions.
Ability to safely navigate uneven surfaces, stairs, ladders, and active construction areas.
Ability to lift and carry surveying/layout equipment and materials as required.
Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
