Part-Time Juvenile Mentor

Compensation
- $40 per completed 1-hour face-to-face appointment
- $65 per completed 2-hour face-to-face appointment
The appointment rate includes the completed face-to-face mentoring service, required documentation, and drive time associated with the appointment.
The number of available appointments will depend on youth referrals, assigned caseloads, service authorization, scheduling, and program needs.

About the Role
RY Services is seeking a dependable and compassionate Juvenile Mentor to provide one-to-one mentoring services to teens involved in the juvenile justice system.
This role is intended for someone who can show up consistently, build trust, model positive behavior, and help youth make safer and healthier choices.
Many of the teens we serve have experienced challenges involving family conflict, school difficulties, negative peer influence, poor decision-making, behavioral defiance, substance-use concerns, or firearm-related offenses.
The Juvenile Mentor is not a therapist or probation officer. The Mentor serves as a positive adult role model who helps youth develop life skills, strengthen accountability, identify goals, and move away from behaviors and influences that may increase their risk of continued involvement in the juvenile justice system.
This position requires reliability, professionalism, strong boundaries, timely documentation, and the ability to work independently in youth homes and approved community-based settings.
Position Growth
This position begins as a part-time, appointment-based role.
As the Mentorship Program grows and additional youth are assigned, there may be an opportunity for the position to transition into full-time employment.
RY Services cannot provide an estimated date or guarantee that the position will become full-time. Any future change in employment status, schedule, compensation, benefits, or job expectations will be communicated separately.
Company Vehicle
A company vehicle may be provided for approved mentoring appointments based on availability and program needs.
When a company vehicle is provided:
- The vehicle must be picked up from the RY Services office in Tempe before use.
- The vehicle must be returned to the Tempe office after the approved appointment or activity.
- The vehicle may not be taken home or kept overnight.
- The vehicle may only be used for approved work-related purposes.
- The Mentor must follow all agency vehicle, transportation, and safety policies.
Applicants must have reliable transportation to and from the RY Services office in Tempe.

What You’ll Do
- Provide one-to-one mentoring services to assigned youth.
- Meet with each assigned youth at least once per week or as authorized.
- Provide services in youth homes and approved community-based settings.
- Support youth in addressing probation-identified risk factors and individualized service-plan goals.
- Model pro-social behavior, healthy communication, emotional regulation, accountability, and safe decision-making.
- Engage youth in structured activities that support school engagement, employment readiness, life skills, positive recreation, community involvement, and future planning.
- Help youth identify their strengths, interests, goals, and positive alternatives to risky behavior.
- Assist youth with developing practical problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills.
- Communicate professionally with parents, guardians, probation officers, supervisors, care coordinators, and internal team members.
- Complete accurate documentation following every mentoring appointment.
- Submit required documentation within established deadlines.
- Immediately report safety concerns, incidents, disclosures, or mandated-reporting concerns according to agency policy.
- Participate in required supervision, training, team meetings, and quality-assurance activities.
What Success Looks Like
Successful Juvenile Mentors are consistent, dependable, patient, and relationship-driven.
They can connect with teens while maintaining clear and appropriate professional boundaries. They can encourage youth, redirect inappropriate behavior, reinforce accountability, and remain calm when a youth is resistant, disengaged, frustrated, or testing limits.
Successful Mentors are also organized, responsive, comfortable working independently, and able to complete professional documentation accurately and on time.
Key Performance Expectations
- Complete at least one face-to-face mentoring session with each assigned youth every week unless a cancellation or approved exception is documented.
- Maintain a completed-session rate of 90% or higher for scheduled mentoring appointments.
- Submit 100% of progress notes within 24 hours of service delivery.
- Maintain documentation compliance of 95% or higher based on internal quality reviews.
- Document each youth’s progress toward individualized goals at least monthly.
- Complete at least two structured pro-social or skill-building activities with each youth per month when appropriate.
- Respond to supervisors, care coordinators, and probation-related communications within one business day.
- Maintain professional communication with youth, families, probation officers, and agency team members.
- Complete all required onboarding, supervision, annual training, and compliance requirements by assigned deadlines.
Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- At least one year of experience working with adolescents required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Clean and acceptable driving record required.
- Current Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card required.
- Must be able to pass all required background and compliance checks.
- Must be available to work a flexible, part-time schedule that includes afternoons, evenings, and weekends.
- Must be comfortable working in youth homes and community-based settings.
- Must be able to travel throughout assigned service areas.
- Must be comfortable transporting youth when authorized and required by the program.
- Strong communication, documentation, organization, time-management, and boundary-setting skills required.
- Must be able to complete documentation accurately and within 24 hours of each appointment.
- Must have reliable transportation to and from the RY Services office in Tempe when using a company vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with juvenile probation, juvenile corrections, high-risk youth, behavioral health, trauma-informed care, coaching, mentoring, or community-based services.
- College coursework in behavioral health, criminal justice, social work, education, psychology, or a related field.
- Experience completing professional progress notes or service documentation.
- Experience providing services independently in youth homes or community settings.
