Full Job Description

Assists in the operation, maintenance and control of Authority-owned water and wastewater system assets throughout Pearl River County, to ensure reliable, safe, compliant, economical and efficient operation.

● Inspects water and wastewater systems for proper operation

● Records and calculates water and wastewater gallons pumped and lost

● Keeps thorough and accurate permanent paper and electronic log books.

● Operates, exercises, inspects, trouble-shoots, maintains, cleans, repairs, services, replaces a wide variety of water and wastewater equipment, including meters, pumps, piping, manholes, control panels, chlorinators, chemical feeders, valves, transducers, floats, bubblers, gauges, light bulbs, relays, capacitors, control boards, locks, push-buttons, electric gates, motor starters, VFDs, back- flow devices, orbals, clarifiers, bar screens, digestors, belt presses, and generators

● Performs general housekeeping duties at all vehicles and structures, including cleaning, sweeping, mopping, washing, painting, mowing and weed-eating

● Occasionally digs, back-fills, rakes, grades and seeds excavation repair sites

● Locates water and sewer mains for “Mississippi One Call”

● Utilizes SCADA telemetry systems to monitor processes

● Jets, vacuums, and video inspects sewer lines

● Attends safety meetings and follows safety precautions according to OSHA standards

● Sludge judges primary and final clarifiers

● Assists in reading of electrical and water meters and the maintenance of water meters

● Attends training and acquires certifications as required by management

● Protects tools, vehicles, structure, and equipment from theft, damage, or abuse

● Maintains neat, organized work-spaces, facilities, and vehicles at all times

● Reports sewer overflows to supervisor, and applies lime to affected area

● Performs other duties as apparent or assigned

● Reports critical or dangerous conditions to supervisor immediately

● Assists with preparation and response to natural or man-made disasters

REQUIRED EDUCATION OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); minimum of two years experience in water/ wastewater field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Technical training is desired.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

● Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, blue prints, maps, as-built drawings and procedure manuals.

● Ability to prepare routine reports and correspondence. Ability to communicate with other employees and the general public.

● Ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.

● Ability to compute volume, flow, detentions, flow velocities, pressures, feet head, rates, percentages and ratios.

● Ability to apply common-sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

● Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

DESIRED SKILLS:

● Extensive general maintenance skills.

● Knowledge of plumbing and electrical, and various styles of pumps.

● General knowledge of computer operations and software programs.

● Ability to work weekends and holidays, be on call and respond to calls during non-work hours.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES LICENSES: Valid Mississippi Driver’s License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee is required to stand 6-8 hours per day, and to occasionally climb or balance. The employee must regularly lift and/ or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, extreme heat, and vibration. Occasionally, the employee will be required to enter confined spaces, such as valve pits, sewer manholes and wet-wells. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
