Director of Underwriting
100% Remote | Full-Time
HOVIN Underwriting Partners, Inc. is seeking an experienced Director of Underwriting to provide oversight and strategic direction across our life underwriting operations. This fully remote, full-time role is ideal for a seasoned underwriting professional who combines deep technical expertise with strong decision-making and the ability to partner closely with clients, and internal teams.
The Director of Underwriting plays a critical role in upholding underwriting quality, consistency, and client satisfaction while guiding underwriting staff, setting standards, and supporting business growth.
Role Overview
As Director of Underwriting, you will oversee underwriting strategy and day-to-day underwriting operations across multiple client engagements. You will maintain the highest level of underwriting authority, provide guidance on complex and high-face-amount cases, mentor senior and junior underwriters, and serve as a key liaison to clients, and leadership.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting Leadership & Authority
- Provide final underwriting approval and oversight for complex, high-risk, and high-face-amount cases
- Maintain underwriting authority from $5,000,000 to $10,000,000 subject to client limits.
- Ensure underwriting decisions align with HOVIN standards, client expectations, and regulatory requirements
- Serve as escalation point for adverse, complex, or precedent-setting cases
- Act as a primary underwriting resource for clients, reinsurers, and internal stakeholders
- Participate in client meetings, audits, and strategic discussions
- Provide underwriting insights to support client retention, growth, and reinsurance strategy
- Represent HOVIN professionally in industry forums and client-facing engagements
- Ensure consistency in underwriting practices across multiple clients and platforms
- Monitor underwriting trends, medical advancements, and industry best practices
- Contribute to the evolution of underwriting guidelines, workflows, and risk frameworks
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience
- 10+ years of life underwriting experience, including senior-level authority
- Extensive experience with both direct writer and reinsurance underwriting
- Proven ability to evaluate highly complex medical and non-medical risks
- Industry coursework required, including LOMA, ALU, FLMI, or similar (completed or in progress)
Technical Knowledge
- Expert-level knowledge of:
- Anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and complex medical impairments
- Medical terminology, lab analysis, APS interpretation, and ECGs
- Financial underwriting concepts and legal documentation
- Non-medical risks including aviation, hazardous avocations, foreign travel, and occupational exposure
