Full Job Description

An established, high-quality hospitality organization in Southeast Michigan is seeking an experienced Executive Sous Chef to join its culinary leadership team.

This is an excellent opportunity for a talented culinary professional who enjoys being actively involved in daily kitchen operations while also taking ownership of people, organization, standards and financial performance.

The Executive Sous Chef will work closely with the Executive Chef and serve as a key leader within the culinary operation. This individual will help oversee day-to-day food production, kitchen organization, team development, purchasing, inventory, scheduling, sanitation and cost controls.

We are looking for a chef who is equally comfortable leading from the floor, developing employees and jumping onto the line when needed. The successful candidate will bring a strong sense of urgency, attention to detail and pride in creating a well-organized kitchen environment.

Key Responsibilities

Assist the Executive Chef in leading all aspects of daily culinary operations.
Assume primary kitchen leadership responsibilities when the Executive Chef is unavailable.
Coordinate daily food preparation and production based on anticipated business levels.
Help develop and execute menus while maintaining consistent standards for quality, presentation and portioning.
Maintain a clean, organized and professional kitchen environment at all times.
Ensure proper sanitation, food handling and workplace safety procedures are consistently followed.
Supervise culinary employees and provide clear direction, coaching and accountability.
Participate in recruiting, interviewing, selecting and training culinary team members.
Develop schedules and adjust staffing based on business demands and operational needs.
Assist with purchasing, receiving, storage and organization of food products and kitchen supplies.
Participate in physical inventories and maintain appropriate inventory controls.
Monitor food usage, waste, labor and other controllable expenses.
Review operational and production information to identify opportunities to improve efficiency and profitability.
Help maintain food and labor costs within established financial expectations.
Address employee questions and concerns in a professional and timely manner.
Maintain kitchen equipment, work areas, storage areas and production spaces to established standards.
Build a positive kitchen culture centered around teamwork, accountability and professionalism.
Interact professionally with guests when appropriate and respond constructively to feedback.
Lead by example and remain actively engaged in production and service.

What We Are Looking For

The ideal candidate will be a hands-on culinary leader who:

Demonstrates strong kitchen organization and attention to detail.
Understands the importance of consistency in food quality and presentation.
Can effectively lead, coach and develop a diverse culinary team.
Is comfortable managing both high-volume production and individualized dining service.
Understands food cost, labor management, purchasing and inventory control.
Maintains high expectations for cleanliness, sanitation and workplace safety.
Communicates effectively with culinary employees and other operational leaders.
Can remain composed and organized during periods of significant business volume.
Is willing to work a flexible hospitality schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays as business levels require.
Has the desire and ability to continue developing as a culinary leader.

Leadership Opportunity

This position is particularly well suited for an experienced Sous Chef or Executive Sous Chef who is ready to take on broader operational responsibility.

The successful candidate will have significant involvement in culinary operations and the opportunity to strengthen the leadership, financial and operational skills necessary for continued advancement within the hospitality industry.
