Are you an experienced Surg Tech with a passion for orthopaedic surgery? UPMC Magee Bone and Joint Center is looking for a dedicated CST to join our team. We offer a unique opportunity to work exclusively in orthopaedic surgery, providing specialized care to our patients.

Preferred Experience:

1-2 years of Operating Room (OR) experience, preferably in orthopedics.

Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title and salary from the career ladder based on their individual experience and education.

Responsibilities:

After surgery, may help transfer patients to the recovery room. Clean and restock the operating room.
Serves as a resource to other staff members, precepts students and new employees.
Assist in the preparation, care for, and disposal of specimens taken for laboratory analysis and helps apply dressings.
Participates in committees and inter-disciplinary teams.
Assist the surgical team with putting on sterile gowns and gloves.
Before an operation, help to prepare the operating room by setting up surgical instruments and equipment, sterile drapes, and sterile solutions. Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment. Adjust and check equipment to ensure it is working properly.
Collaborates with Clinician to disseminate new knowledge.
Ensure all medications are labeled and handed to surgeon according to established policies and procedures.
Ensure clean, safe environment through continued alertness to safety and explosive hazards and aseptic technique.
Prepare patients for surgery by wash, shave, and ensure aseptic incision sites. May transport patients to the operating room, help position them on the operating table and cover them with sterile surgical drapes.
During surgery, efficiently pass instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeons and surgeon assistants. Hold retractors or instruments, cut sutures, sponge or suction the operative site and help count sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments.

Pennsylvania (House Bill 81)

Effective Date: December 27, 2020
Experience Requirement:
- Minimum 2 years of current surgical tech experience
- Must demonstrate advanced knowledge in at least 2 surgical specialties (e.g., general, ortho, vascular, OB/GYN, neuro, etc.)
Certification Pathways (must meet one):
- Graduate of an accredited surgical tech program and certified (CST or TSC)
- Completed appropriate military training
- Employed as a surgical tech on or before 12/27/2020 (grandfathered)
- Employed as a surgical tech at another facility 2 years before 12/27/2020
Medication Access:
- Limited to distribution to nurses only
Exception Clause:
- Facilities may hire uncertified techs if:
  - A diligent and thorough effort to recruit certified techs is documented
  - Certified/eligible tech supply is insufficient
  - Written records of recruitment efforts are retained
Continuing Education:
- Certified techs: Must follow credentialing body’s CE requirements
- Non-certified techs: 30 hours of CE every 2 years

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

Required Certifications:
- Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) or Tech in Surgery-Certified (TSC)
- CPR/BLS certification (AHA standards with didactic + skills demo within 30 days of hire)
- Act 34 clearance
Certification Timeline:
- New grads from accredited programs may work up to 6 months before certification is required
Grandfathering Clause:
- Surgical techs employed on or before 12/27/2020 or at another facility 2 years prior are exempt from certification

Recruitment efforts are documented and available
Certified/eligible surgical tech supply does not meet current staffing needs
