The Professional Staff Nurse, BSN, Expert is a Registered Nurse who serves as a key member of the care team, accountable for delivering high-quality nursing care and advancing practice through process improvement. This role sets standards for care delivery and exercises responsibility, authority, and accountability in managing patient care for individuals and families. Through independent judgment, effective communication, and collaboration, the Professional Staff Nurse, BSN, Expert provides leadership, coordination, supervision, and support across the continuum of care. The role fosters strong partnerships with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary team members to achieve optimal outcomes while demonstrating a commitment to the community and the nursing profession.

Responsibilities:

Delivers holistic, patient-centered care using Relationship-Based Care and evidence-based practice.

Demonstrates advanced clinical judgment, communication, and care coordination skills.

Promotes patient safety, quality outcomes, and an exceptional patient experience.

Builds collaborative relationships and fosters a healthy, inclusive work environment.

Identifies and leads quality improvement, innovation, and practice change initiatives.

Serves as a clinical leader, role model, and resource for the interdisciplinary team.

Participates in peer review, shared governance, and organizational committees to advance nursing practice.

Minimum 4 years experience.
BSN required.
Radiology experience preferred

Annual completion of a professional contribution selected from department, hospital or system gals, and approved by Unit Director AND either:

UPMC approved nursing certification required
Certification not required if Master's in nursing or DNP is held.
If a BSN is held, a Master's degree in a related field may be substituted in lieu of Certification.
Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
Must obtain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on a Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation to be promoted to this level.
Must maintain a Solid/Strong/Good or higher on annual performance evaluation to maintain status.
Ability to establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, ancillary and support staff, other departments, and patients/families.
Ability to work productively and effectively within a complex environment, handle multiple/changing priorities and specialized equipment.
Exemplary clinical judgment with critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving abilities required as related to various aspects of patient care.
Critical thinking skills necessary to exercise and to lead others in application of the nursing process.
Mobility and visual manual dexterity.
Physical stamina for frequent walking, standing, lifting and positioning of patients.

Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
Current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.
Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Registered Nurse (RN)

Act 33 / 34 / 73 with renewal

Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
