Full Job Description

Elementary/High School Prevention Counselor

Program for the Development of Human Potential (PDHP)

Department of Education, Diocese of Brooklyn

PDHP, the Program for the Development of Human Potential, operates under the auspices of the Department of Education, Diocese of Brooklyn. It is funded primarily by the NYS Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services and other state and federal grants. PDHP provides alcohol, substance abuse and gambling prevention services to the Catholic elementary and high schools in Brooklyn and Queens.

The high school/elementary school counselor is responsible for providing counseling and educational services in their assigned schools with a region.

Essential Responsibilities:

· Reduce the prevalence of substance abuse among youth

· Delay the initiation of substance abuse behavior among youth

· Decrease the negative health, social, and educational consequences associated with substance abuse

· Prevent the escalation of substance abuse behaviors to levels requiring treatment

· Provide short-term individual/group counseling for high risk students. Number of required cases to be determined by program need, OASAS prevention guidelines and PDHP administrators.

· Assess students for referral to the therapy unit, mental health agency or substance misuse facilities.

· Consult with parents of any student seen in individual or group counseling.

· Provide crisis intervention to students and families. Participate in Crisis Response Team as requested by borough director or executive director.

· Deliver evidence-based education curriculum with fidelity to students as required by the funding agency. Number of curriculum deliveries determined by needs of school, program, OASAS prevention guidelines and PDHP administrators.

· Administer with fidelity pre/post assessments

· Provide faculty workshops when requested by school administrator, regional coordinator, Borough director or executive director.

· Facilitate schoolwide awareness events (National Prevention Week, Problem Gambling Awareness, Red Ribbon Week, etc.)

· Provide parent services annually to each of the schools to which they are assigned.

· Serve as a resource for administrators, teachers, and parents for substance abuse education and drug related problems in the school.

· Serve on the school drug policy committee and provide technical assistance to school administrators on how to develop and implement such policies.

· Attend regular supervision meetings with regional coordinator.

· Attend group clinical consultation meetings as directed by the borough director.

· Attend regular peer meetings when scheduled.

· Maintain all required program paperwork and records.

· Attend all general staff meetings called by the executive director.

Qualifications:

Advanced degree in counseling, psychology, social work or related field.
License required if available in field of study.
Minimum of two years individual and group counseling with high-risk school aged clients.
Advanced degree may substitute for experience.
