Position Overview
We are seeking a motivated Apprentice Honing Technician / Precision Machinist Trainee who is eager to learn, grow, and build a long-term career in the precision machining trade. This is a hands-on role ideal for someone with foundational machine shop experience who wants to develop into a skilled honer and machinist.
You will start with essential shop tasks—unpacking, cleaning, prepping, inspecting, and packaging parts—while learning the fundamentals of the honing process, precision measurement, and machine operation. Over time, you will progress into setting up, operating, and maintaining precision honing equipment to produce components with extremely tight tolerances.

Must Haves:
- 1+ years of machine shop experience (honing or precision machining exposure is a major plus)
- Familiarity with precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, dial bore gauges, etc.)
- Comfort working with tight tolerances and quality-critical components
- Basic understanding of shop math, measurement, and mechanical principles
- Ability to read and interpret simple technical drawings
- Strong attention to detail, willingness to learn, and a positive team attitude
Plusses:
- Experience with honing, lapping, or other precision finishing processes
- Familiarity with SUNNEN equipment
- Strong mechanical aptitude, hands-on troubleshooting mindset
- Interest in building a career in machining and manufacturing
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
Entry-Level / Apprentice Responsibilities (Primary Early Duties):
- Unpack, clean, and prep parts for machining
- Assist with part inspection using precision measurement tools
- Package and label finished components
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Support machinists with basic tasks as you learn the process
Training & Skill-Building (Progressive Responsibilities):
- Learn to set up and operate manual honing machines
- Understand how to achieve precise dimensional tolerances and surface finishes
- Work with a variety of materials including steel, aluminum, titanium, plastics, and specialty alloys
- Learn tool selection, stones, and proper machine setup for different jobs
Quality Control:
- Use micrometers, calipers, and bore gauges to verify dimensions
- Assist in inspecting parts for accuracy, quality, and finish once trained
Blueprint & Process Learning:
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and blueprints with increasing independence
- Understand machining requirements and process flow
Maintenance & Shop Support:
- Participate in routine cleaning, maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of honing machines
- Support shop efficiency and proactively communicate issues
Collaboration:
- Work closely with senior machinists, engineers, and quality control teams
- Learn best practices and contribute to a strong team environment
