Full Job Description

Location: Plano, TX (On-site)

Compensation: $70,000–$80,000 base

About the Company

MPS Acoustics is scaling rapidly and expanding its portfolio of architectural felt products. We are hiring a hands-on Product Design Engineer to design cut and folded felt wall and ceiling installations based on customer drawings, specifications, and aesthetic requirements, and to adapt our core products to fit a wide range of custom applications.

You will own designs from customer intent through manufacturable, well-documented product drawings, partnering closely with the Sales team to interpret requirements and with Production to ensure projects are completed accurately. This role will produce products that are repeatable, buildable, visually correct, and continuously improving.

Outcomes This Role Owns

Manufacturable, aesthetically correct product designs that meet customer requirements
Core products reliably adapted to custom customer applications
Clear, usable product documentation and assembly work instructions
Continual product and process improvements that reduce cost, defects, rework, and build time
Strong, consistent design standards and drafting practices

Key Responsibilities

1) Product Design and Customization (Customer-Driven)

Design products in SolidWorks based on customer drawings, specifications, and aesthetic requirements.
Modify and adapt core MPS products to fit custom customer applications.
Apply design-for-manufacturing (DFM) and design-for-aesthetics principles so products are buildable, repeatable, and visually correct.
Partner with the Sales team to interpret customer requirements and translate them into clear, easily producible designs.
Designs and validates assembly and manufacturing jigs and fixtures as required.

2) Prototyping and Product Development

Design, build, and evaluate prototypes for design changes and new product configurations.
Validate fit, manufacturability, and appearance before releasing designs to production.
Support new product development efforts as the product line expands.

3) Documentation and Standards

Develop and maintain product documentation, including models, drawings, and product standards.
Write clear assembly work instructions, SOPs, and other technical documentation as required.
Establish and apply drafting best practices and revision control so designs stay accurate and consistent.

4) Product Improvement and Continuous Engineering

Identify and execute product and process improvements that reduce cost, defects, rework, and build time.
Drive permanent design fixes and verify that changes deliver the intended result.

5) Production Support and Quality

Provide day-to-day engineering support to production teams.
Support resolution of quality issues, including root cause analysis and corrective action.
Review drawings produced by drafters and provide technical guidance when needed.

Qualifications

2+ years of product design or mechanical engineering experience (made-to-order or high-mix manufacturing preferred)
Assembly jig and fixture design
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience
Competence in SolidWorks modeling and drafting best practices
Demonstrated product design experience
Experience developing product standards documentation
Strong technical writing ability (SOPs, work instructions, etc.)
Working knowledge of design for manufacturing (DFM)
Experience designing to aesthetic and appearance requirements

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with parametric modeling tools and SolidWorks sheet metal tools
Sheet metal design background
New product development (NPD) experience
Experience in architectural products, acoustics, or a related manufacturing industry

Skills and Attributes

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving ability
Clear communication with both technical and non-technical audiences
Detail-oriented and accuracy-driven
Comfortable mentoring drafters and other engineers
Able to identify the information needed to complete a project and proactively pursue it
Organized, self-directed, and follow-through driven
