GREEN MOUNTAIN WELDING INC.
ROAD CREW LEAD
Welding | Fabrication | Construction Reports to: Leadership Team
Compensation: $35.00 – $40.00 / hr
Role Overview
The Road Crew Lead is a field-based leadership role responsible for the safe, efficient, and quality execution of on-site welding and fabrication projects — including stair, handrail, and ramp installation as well as structural steel and building erection. This individual serves as the primary point of accountability on the job site directing crew members, maintaining production standards, communicating with project stakeholders, and ensuring every deliverable meets Green Mountain's quality and safety benchmarks. This is not a "lead by title" role. It is a lead-by-example position for a craftsman who has earned the right to run a crew and is ready to grow into expanded operational responsibility.
About Us
Green Mountain Welding Inc. is a growing, field-driven welding and fabrication company built on craftsmanship, accountability, and a relentless commitment to quality. We serve a diverse portfolio of clients across construction, industrial, and infrastructure markets delivering structural steel, custom fabrication, and on-site welding solutions that stand the test of time. Our team is our competitive edge: skilled tradespeople who take pride in their work and show up ready to solve complex problems in the field. We believe in promoting from within, investing in the development of our people, and building a culture where high performers are recognized and rewarded. As we continue to expand our road operations, we are looking for proven leaders who can run a crew with precision, professionalism, and drive.
What Success Looks Like
- All assigned road projects have been delivered on time, within scope, and at or above quality expectations with zero repeat deficiencies.
- A culture of safety is firmly established within the crew; recordable incidents are at zero, and near-misses are reported and resolved proactively.
- Crew members report high levels of clarity, accountability, and job satisfaction — with measurable improvement in team retention.
- Site documentation, daily logs, and job reports are consistently accurate, complete, and submitted on time.
- Material usage, labor hours, and equipment utilization are tracked and within budget on the majority of projects.
- The Road Crew Lead has demonstrated readiness to take on larger, more complex projects and has been identified as a candidate for expanded leadership responsibility.
Objectives
- Achieve 95%+ on-time project completion across all road crew assignments within the first 6 months.
- Maintain a zero recordable incident rate on all job sites through rigorous safety protocol enforcement and daily hazard identification.
- Reduce material waste by 10% within 90 days through accurate pre-job planning, inventory tracking, and crew accountability.
- Deliver complete, accurate daily field reports and project documentation within the same business day, 100% of the time.
- Achieve a crew utilization rate of 90%+ by optimizing task assignments, sequencing, and shift productivity on each project.
- Establish a pre-job safety briefing ritual (toolbox talks) for every shift start — 100% compliance within 30 days.
- Reduce equipment downtime and site delays by proactively communicating supply chain needs and scheduling conflicts at least 48 hours in advance.
- Develop at least one crew member into a capable crew lead candidate through intentional on-the-job coaching and skills mentoring within 12 months.
- Maintain a client/project satisfaction rating of 4.5/5 or higher based on internal project reviews and stakeholder feedback.
- Ensure 100% of crew members hold current and valid certifications required for their scope of work — tracking renewals proactively.
- Complete all assigned project closeouts (punch lists, site cleanup, final documentation) within 48 hours of project completion.
- Build and maintain a weekly scheduling cadence that ensures crew readiness, equipment availability, and materials are confirmed before each mobilization.
Competencies
- Field Leadership & Crew Direction: Direct crew operations with clarity and authority. Sets expectations, assigns tasks effectively, and holds team members accountable to performance standards without micromanaging.
- Safety Ownership: Treat safety as a non-negotiable operating standard, not a compliance checkbox. Identifies hazards before they become incidents and instills a safety-first mindset across the crew.
- Welding & Fabrication Technical Proficiency: Demonstrate expert-level knowledge in structural welding, field fabrication, and industry-standard welding processes (MIG, TIG, Stick), including stair, handrail, and ramp installation and structural steel and building erection. Can troubleshoot weld quality issues in real time.
- Project Execution & Time Management: Execute multi-task field projects within defined timelines. Proactively identifies schedule risks and adjusts resources to maintain momentum and on-time delivery.
- Communication & Stakeholder Reporting: Communicate clearly and professionally with crew, project managers, clients, and subcontractors. Produces accurate field reports and escalates issues appropriately and promptly.
- Problem Solving Under Pressure: Maintain composure and make sound decisions in dynamic, high-pressure field environments. Find workable solutions without waiting for direction when the situation demands action.
- Quality Control & Craftsmanship Standards: Inspect work at every stage, not just at completion. Holds the crew to high craftsmanship standards and refuses to pass substandard work to the next phase of a project.
- Coaching & Talent Development: Invests in the growth of crew members by providing real-time feedback, recognizing strengths, and creating opportunities for skill development on the job.
- Equipment & Resource Management: Manage tools, welding equipment, and material inventory responsibly. Track usage, reports maintenance needs proactively, and minimizes avoidable losses.
- Accountability & Ownership Mindset: Owns outcomes, not just tasks. Take personal responsibility for crew performance, project results, and site conditions without deflecting or making excuses.
- Adaptability & Field Problem Agility: Adjust to changing site conditions, scope modifications, and unexpected challenges without losing focus on the end objective.
- Professionalism & Organizational Representation: Represent Green Mountain Welding with professionalism in all client interactions, site conduct, and company communications, understanding that every job is a reflection of the company's reputation.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required; vocational/trade school certification in welding or fabrication strongly preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on welding and fabrication experience in a field or construction environment required. Factory or manufacturing experience alone does not meet this requirement.
- Minimum 1–2 years of supervisory or lead experience directing field crews required.
- Hands-on experience installing stairs, handrails, and ramps in a field environment required.
- Structural steel and building erection experience required.
- AWS (American Welding Society) certification preferred; OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification required or willingness to obtain within 60 days of hire.
- Valid driver's license preferred; CDL or ability to operate heavy equipment a plus.
- Proven track record of delivering field projects on time with measurable quality outcomes.
- Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, blueprints, and weld specs required.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift and carry up to 75 lbs regularly; occasional lifting up to 100 lbs with assistance.
- Must be able to stand, kneel, crouch, and work in confined spaces or at heights for extended periods.
- Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions — heat, cold, wind, and rain.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical and drug screening.
- PPE compliance (welding helmet, gloves, steel-toed boots, ear protection, etc.) is mandatory at all times on site.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Hourly Rate: $35.00 – $40.00 per hour, commensurate with experience and demonstrated performance.
- Competitive pay with performance-based advancement opportunities.
- Overtime eligibility per applicable labor law.
- Opportunity to grow into a Field Superintendent or Operations Leader role as the company scales.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal Road Crew Lead at Green Mountain Welding is a seasoned tradesperson who has naturally evolved from "best welder on the crew" to "the person everyone turns to when something goes wrong." You know the difference between building something in a controlled shop and executing on a live job site. You don't wait to be told what to do, you assess, decide, and execute. You hold your crew to a high standard because you hold yourself to one first. You take pride in clean, solid work and get frustrated when corners are cut. You communicate with respect but don't back down from hard conversations. You're ready to be the face of this company on every job site you walk onto.
This is the right role for you if:
- You have the technical credibility to earn the crew's respect on day one.
- You have hands-on experience installing stairs, handrails, and ramps and erecting structural steel or prefabricated buildings.
- You're equally comfortable running a safety briefing and burning wire in a tight weld position.
- You think in terms of outcomes and project delivery — not just showing up and clocking out.
- You want to grow with a company that is investing in its people and infrastructure.
- You hold yourself accountable and expect the same from everyone around you.
