Client Advisor, R&D Tax Credit

Company: TaxRx Group (Dr. Tax Credit LLC dba TaxRx Group)

Location: Lehi, Utah

Credential requirement: Active JD or CPA license

Status: Full-time, exempt

Position Summary

The Client Advisor owns the professional relationship with a book of healthcare practice clients and is accountable for the technical accuracy of every credit those clients receive. This is a licensed-professional role, not a sales role. You will conduct qualification interviews with physicians, dentists, and practice administrators, apply the IRC §41 four-part test to their clinical and operational research activities, calculate qualified research expenses, and stand behind the resulting work product.

The credential requirement is deliberate. Clients are relying on a licensed professional's judgment about what qualifies and what does not, and the firm expects that judgment to be exercised independently of revenue considerations.

ON THE JOB TRAINING FOR THE RIGHT CANDIDATE

Core Responsibilities

Client relationship ownership

Serve as the single named point of contact for an assigned book of practice clients
Conduct annual planning conversations and scope discussions
Set accurate expectations regarding credit magnitude, timing, carryforward posture, and documentation obligations
Escalate scope, credential, or independence concerns to the Care Team Lead and legal without delay

Technical qualification and calculation

Interview practice principals and clinical staff to identify candidate qualified research activities
Apply the §41(d) four-part test to each activity and document the analysis in writing, including activities determined not to qualify and the reason for exclusion
Identify and exclude activities barred by §41(d)(4), with particular attention to routine data collection, quality control, adaptation, and funded research
Build the QRE base across wages under §41(b)(2)(D), supplies, and contract research at the applicable §41(b)(3) percentage
Determine the appropriate credit method (regular credit versus ASC under §41(c)(5)) and document the election rationale
Address controlled group and aggregation questions under §41(f) where multiple entities are present
Reconcile calculations against the firm's QRA catalog and calculation standards

Deliverable and documentation quality

Produce or review the client study, including activity narratives, expense schedules, methodology description, and supporting authority
Ensure documentation is contemporaneous, substantiated, and traceable to source records rather than reconstructed after the fact
Support Form 6765 preparation and coordinate with the client's return preparer
Submit all completed work to the Accounting Core for substantive accuracy review and gate approval before delivery
Maintain complete engagement files sufficient to support the position on examination

Examination and controversy support

Respond to client inquiries arising from IRS or state notices relating to delivered credits
Assemble substantiation packages and draft responses to information document requests under supervision of legal
Participate in post-examination review to improve methodology

Firm contribution

Contribute to the QRA catalog, methodology standards, and internal training
Provide feedback on calculation tooling and platform workflow
Mentor analysts and junior staff on technical review

Required Qualifications

Active JD or CPA license in good standing
Three or more years of substantive experience in federal tax, with direct exposure to IRC §41 credit computation, tax controversy, or specialty tax incentive work
Demonstrated ability to read and apply primary authority, including the Code, Treasury regulations, and relevant case law, and to write a defensible technical position
Comfort holding a technical position under commercial pressure, including telling a client that an activity does not qualify
Client-facing communication skills sufficient to explain a §41 analysis to a physician with no tax background
Working proficiency in Excel and comfort with cloud-based workflow tools

Preferred Qualifications

Prior work with healthcare providers, medical or dental practices, or life sciences clients
Experience with §174 capitalization and its interaction with the credit
Experience defending R&D credits on examination or at Appeals
LL.M. in Taxation, or CPA with a tax concentration
Familiarity with cost segregation, captive insurance, or other specialty incentive areas

Precision under volume. Manages a substantial book without degrading accuracy on any single file.

Compensation and Benefits

Base salary: $70 - $150k
Performance bonus tied to client retention, technical review pass rate, and file quality. Bonus is not tied to credit magnitude or fee volume.
