Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator

Nine Lives | Redwood City, CA32–40 Hours/Week | $30–$33/hourOne Weekend Day Required | Occasional Evenings

About Nine Lives

Nine Lives is a growing, feline-only nonprofit rescue, adoption center, and veterinary organization dedicated to saving at-risk cats and kittens and expanding access to affordable feline veterinary care.

In 2026, we opened our new, expanded facility at 749 Brewster Avenue in Redwood City, dramatically increasing our capacity for rescue, adoption, spay/neuter, TNR, veterinary care, and community programs.

As Nine Lives grows, so does our need for an exceptional volunteer program. We are seeking an experienced, energetic Volunteer & Community Engagement Coordinator to lead, support, and grow our incredible volunteer community.

The Opportunity

This position oversees the recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, engagement, and ongoing support of Nine Lives volunteers.

This is a hands-on role. You'll be just as comfortable leading an orientation or managing Volgistics as you are coaching a volunteer, writing an SOP, or working alongside volunteers on the shelter floor.

Lead the Nine Lives Volunteer Program

Serve as the primary point of contact for current and prospective volunteers.
Recruit, onboard, engage, and retain a strong volunteer community.
Build relationships with volunteers through regular communication, coaching, recognition, and support.
Address volunteer concerns and performance issues, partnering with leadership when appropriate.

Manage Volunteer Onboarding & Training

Lead orientations and coordinate onboarding, required training, and shadow shifts.
Match volunteers with appropriate roles based on organizational needs, interests, and abilities.
Develop a working knowledge of all Nine Lives volunteer positions.
Provide hands-on training, competency assessment, and refresher training.

Manage Scheduling & Daily Volunteer Operations

Manage volunteer scheduling, records, hours, and training through Volgistics.
Monitor schedules and proactively fill coverage gaps.
Maintain a visible presence throughout the shelter and clinic, providing real-time support and guidance.
Work with department leaders to anticipate volunteer needs and step into volunteer duties when needed.

Build an Exceptional Volunteer Experience

Develop volunteer newsletters, announcements, reminders, and regular communications.
Gather feedback and continually improve the volunteer experience.
Recognize volunteer milestones and contributions.
Coordinate volunteer appreciation initiatives, including Volunteer Appreciation Week and our annual appreciation event.

Maintain Volunteer SOPs, Training & Resources

Own and maintain the Nine Lives Volunteer Handbook.
Develop and update volunteer SOPs, FAQs, checklists, and training resources.
Work with department leaders to ensure volunteer procedures reflect current operations.
Communicate changes and coordinate retraining as needed.

Champion Safety & Compliance

Ensure volunteers complete required documentation and safety training.
Reinforce Fear Free handling, sanitation, infection-control, PPE, confidentiality, and professional conduct standards.
Address safety or conduct concerns through coaching, retraining, and escalation when appropriate.

Grow Our Community Engagement

Build relationships with businesses, schools, community organizations, and service groups.
Develop corporate and group volunteer opportunities.
Represent Nine Lives at community events and volunteer fairs.
Coordinate volunteer support for adoption events, vaccine clinics, fundraising events, and special projects.

Tell the Story of Our Volunteers

Gather volunteer stories, photos, testimonials, and impact data.
Partner with Communications and Development to highlight volunteer contributions across social media, newsletters, annual reports, and fundraising communications.

Track, Evaluate & Improve the Program

Monitor volunteer participation, hours, engagement, and retention.
Establish and track volunteer program goals and KPIs.
Identify gaps and opportunities to improve recruitment, training, scheduling, communication, and engagement.

Who We're Looking For

We're looking for a people person and a program builder who can develop strong relationships while creating the systems needed to run an exceptional volunteer program.

3–5 years of volunteer management, community engagement, nonprofit operations, or related experience preferred.
Experience managing or coordinating a large volunteer team.
Animal welfare, shelter, rescue, or veterinary experience preferred.
Strong communication, organization, training, and relationship-building skills.
Experience with volunteer-management software; Volgistics is a plus.
Comfortable coaching volunteers and addressing performance concerns.
Comfortable working hands-on in a busy animal shelter and veterinary environment.
Available to work one weekend day each week and occasional evenings.
