Full Job Description

Position Description: The Associate Deam of Nursing works cooperatively with and under the direct supervision of the Dean of Nursing, BSN Degree Nursing Program in all phases of program administration. The Assistant Director performs the Director’s duties in that person’s absence and acts as a liaison between the Director and the program faculty, staff and students.

Position Qualifications: The Associate Dean of Nursing must be a registered nurse faculty member who is knowledgeable and current regarding the program and the policies by which it is administered. This person must qualify for authorization by state agencies to ensure that all programs are properly supervised in compliance with the requirements of Title XVI of the State Education Code and other state regulations.

Eligibility for approval by the California Board of Registered Nursing
Current license as a registered professional nurse in good standing.
A Master’s or higher degree from an accredited college or university which includes coursework in nursing, education or administration
A minimum of two years’ experience teaching in pre-or post-licensure registered nursing programs (Pre-licensure RN teaching experience at the “instructor” classification).
At least one year’s continuous full-time, or its equivalent, experience providing direct patient care as a registered nurse; or
Equivalent experience and/or education as determined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
Minimum of two hundred forty (240) hours of clinical experience within the previous three (3) years in the designated nursing area; or have a minimum of one (1) academic year of registered nursing level clinical teaching experience in the designated nursing area within the previous five (5) years.
Current BCLS certification.
Current clinical nursing malpractice insurance.
Criminal background clearance.
Physical/health clearance from licensed healthcare provider, including clinical participation requirements
Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of program students, faculty and staff.
Superior interpersonal and communication skills.
Proficient in MS Office, Internet, and course management software.

Position Selection: The prospective Assistant Director is identified by the Director of Nursing through a panel interview process with the approval of the college president. All qualified interested candidates should submit a current resume’, transcripts, certification and licensure to the Human Resource Department for consideration. The resume’ must include education and a narrative description of clinical experience within the previous five (5) years with references to substantiate the RN experience. The Assistant Director is hired following approval from the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN)

Position Release Time: Associate Dean of Nursing receives 50% release time for administration of the program.

Position Responsibilities:

Designated by the director to assist in the administration of the program and perform the functions of the director when needed
Supervise the Simulation/Skills Lab Coordinator/Technician to ensure quality simulation education
Chair the Program Curriculum Committee
Perform all faculty roles and responsibilities as assigned including participation in faculty and committee meetings
Conduct preliminary facility evaluations to assure clinical and student competencies can be met; elicit faculty feedback at the completion of each clinical rotation to assure ongoing facility evaluation
Conduct annual review of each clinical facility to determine the appropriate placement of students based on the facility’s ability to achieve specific clinical outcomes; incorporate formal feedback from each clinical agency and a written summary of student evaluation of clinical settings
Develops and maintain strong relationship with clinical facilities and agency personnel utilizing effective communication skills and professional behavior.
Initiate and coordinate student placement with clinical affiliating agencies; schedule clinical faculty
Participate in the Orange County Long Beach Nursing Education Consortium online clinical placement request process and the annual clinical placement meeting.
Attend clinical affiliation meetings at the contracted agencies to facilitate communication and identify the impact of new student placements.
Meet regularly with the director to insure program compliance with requirements and standards of regulatory agencies and accreditation bodies.
Assist with student problem resolution, implementing policies and procedures, and student orientation and advising.
Promote a culture of professional nursing that embraces compassion and ethic based practice.
Collaborate with director in interpreting program policies and determining need for new departmental policies.
Participate in faculty orientation and development
Provide student counseling and advisement to ensure student success and achievement of program goals (e.g. identify available community services and resources to resolve personal issues impacting student satisfactory academic progress).
Complete professional development activities to maintain expertise in accordance with college standards and identified needs.
