Full Job Description

Under general supervision of the Director of Campus Safety, performs a wide variety of campus security and public services to ensure the safety of persons, protect property of various kinds, maintain order and enforce the rules and regulations governing students, faculty, and staff with superior customer service and integrity. Campus Safety Officer is a non-sworn, unarmed position

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to:

Exercise sound judgment.
Recognize illegal, unsafe and contraband substances or weapons.
Prepare clear and concise reports and routine correspondence. Remember details such as faces, license plate numbers, names and incidents.
Gather, collect and preserve evidence.
Operate a vehicle, observing legal and defensive driving practices.
Work independently in the absence of supervision.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Work effectively with a diverse population.
Reason effectively during emergency situations and adopt an effective course of action.
Utilize effective verbal de-escalation techniques to defuse potentially volatile or disruptive situations involving students, employees, visitors, or members of the public.
Learn Campus Disaster Plan and explain procedures to others.
Perform multiple tasks in a calm, effective and efficient manner.
Perform tasks that require physical exertion, stamina, flexibility, and standing or walking for long periods of time.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Demonstrate a commitment to working in an organization that values and promotes humanism.

Required Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to graduation from high school or GED and one year experience in security and/or in the law enforcement field.

License or Certificate:

Must SATISFACTORILY PASS A BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION.
Possess a valid California driver’s license and have a safe driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

Possession of a California Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Guard Certification.

Essential Job Duties

Key Responsibilities

Providing mobile security patrol on campus.
Patrol by foot, bicycle, motorized cart, or vehicle to assist with public services, including providing protection to campus buildings and property and guarding against fire, intrusion, theft, and vandalism.
Remain attentive to any potential safety and security risk, such as unsecured doors, insufficient lighting, tripping hazards, and evidence of current or previous criminal activity, such as graffiti and burglaries.

Key Responsibilities

Providing fixed security assignments on campus.
Maintaining stationary fixed security assignments at entry points to buildings and/or visible outdoor locations on campus.
Provide information and directions to students and visitors.
Ensure that no unauthorized visitors enter buildings. Ensure that all authorized visitors sign in and out on the check-in sheets.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting and documentation of activity.
Notify supervisors of suspected illegal or suspicious activity noted on campus property during mobile security patrols and fixed security assignments; observe and report unsafe conditions and/or occurrences; make written and oral reports of any hazardous condition impacting the campus and its community.
Prepare a Daily Field Activity report of security assignments and incidents.
Write non-police incident reports or complaints from students, visitors, faculty, and staff.

Key Responsibilities

Building lock-up and building checks.
Check the physical security of buildings, including ensuring that doors and windows are locked and secured, and that alarms are set.
Make routine rounds of buildings to check doors and ensure they remain secure.
This includes key requests to escort personnel into buildings after hours or when they do not have keys, after verifying the legitimacy of each request.

Key Responsibilities

Additional Duties.
Perform additional duties, such as taking custody of found, lost, and abandoned property and attempting to locate owners to return property.
Documenting and properly packaging and storing any unreturned property.
Serve in the Security Operations Center as needed, monitoring surveillance cameras and dispatching security personnel to guide the response to suspicious and criminal activity.
Assist with parking control as needed, by issuing parking permits or enforcing parking violations.
Working special events, such as commencement.
Participating in meetings as required, taking notes, and conducting follow-up actions.

Describe Work Environment

This role operates in dynamic and reactive emergency settings, including natural and human-made disasters, as well as routine peacekeeping situations. Employees may be regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and, on occasion, to airborne particles, fumes, toxic or caustic chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and bodily fluids. Additional hazards may include extreme temperatures (hot and cold), electrical shock, radiation exposure, and vibration. The role may also involve working in potentially hostile environments and requires extensive public interaction. Noise levels typically range from mild to moderate. Incumbents are required to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends.
