Full Job Description

The Head of Microbiology is responsible for leading all microbiological functions within a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. This role ensures compliance with regulatory standards, maintains aseptic practices, and oversees environmental monitoring, sterility assurance, and microbiological testing programs.

Salary range: $85,000 – $95,000 per year
Boca Raton location

Key Responsibilities:

Lead, manage, and supervise the microbiology team.
Prepare and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), general test procedures, and microbiological test methods.
Develop and execute method validation, transfer, and suitability protocols.
Prepare and review validation and qualification protocols and reports for microbiology-related equipment and instruments.
Support and evaluate media fill (aseptic process simulation) studies.
Conduct testing of raw materials, primary packaging materials, and utility systems.
Prepare and analyze quality metrics and trend reports.
Ensure proper qualification and training of analysts before task assignment.
Plan and oversee daily microbiological testing activities, including sterility, BET (Bacterial Endotoxin Test), bioburden, and microbial limit testing (MLT).
Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements such as FDA and GMP guidelines.
Manage quality systems including change control, deviations, out-of-specification (OOS) results, CAPA, QRM, complaints, and recalls.
Support internal and external audits and participate in third-party laboratory qualification.
Monitor industry trends and implement best practices in microbiology.
Provide technical expertise for sterility assurance and cross-functional support.
Oversee and manage the Environmental Monitoring (EM) program.

Requirements:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Microbiology or a related life sciences field.
14–18 years of experience in pharmaceutical microbiology.
Prior experience in injectable manufacturing is required.
Strong knowledge of regulatory requirements (FDA, GMP).
Proven leadership and team management skills.
Experience in handling audits and quality systems (OOS, CAPA, deviations, etc.)
