Position Summary
The Senior Immigration Removal Attorney represents clients in complex removal proceedings before the Immigration Court while supervising and supporting the firm’s Removal Attorneys. This position provides legal strategy, case oversight, quality control, training, and guidance to ensure effective representation, timely filings, accurate documentation, and compliance with ethical and professional standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Legal Representation and Case Strategy
- Represent clients in removal proceedings, including Master Calendar Hearings, Individual or Merits Hearings, bond hearings, BIA appeals, and other EOIR matters.
- Develop and implement legal strategies from initial case review through resolution.
- Assess eligibility for available forms of relief, including cancellation of removal, asylum, withholding of removal, Convention Against Torture protection, adjustment of status, waivers, voluntary departure, TPS, U-Visas, T-Visas, VAWA, DACA, and other applicable remedies.
- Evaluate criminal history, grounds of inadmissibility or removability, CIMTs, aggravated felonies, fraud concerns, and statutory bars.
- Review intake assessments and determine case viability before accepting or continuing representation.
- Identify cases involving no viable relief, ethical concerns, criminal bars, fraud, or client noncompliance and proceed according to court requirements and firm policy.
- Prepare, review, and file motions, applications, briefs, continuances, venue changes, motions to reopen or reconsider, stay requests, and other legal filings.
- Prepare clients and witnesses for testimony, court appearances, and Individual Hearings.
- Coordinate the collection of affidavits, evaluations, country condition evidence, criminal records, and other supporting documentation.
- Work with external experts, including mental health professionals, country condition specialists, criminal attorneys, and appellate counsel.
- Maintain professional communication with Immigration Judges, DHS attorneys, court personnel, and government agencies.
- The attorney will maintain an active caseload and will be responsible for assigning and distributing cases among subordinate attorneys.
Attorney Supervision and Leadership
- Supervise, mentor, and provide legal guidance to Removal Attorneys.
- Conduct regular case review meetings to evaluate legal strategy, relief eligibility, evidence, deadlines, and risk exposure.
- Review and approve complex legal strategies, motions, briefs, applications, and court filings.
- Monitor attorney caseloads, hearing schedules, filing deadlines, and case progression.
- Provide feedback regarding legal analysis, writing, courtroom preparation, client communication, productivity, and documentation.
- Train and onboard new attorneys regarding immigration law, court procedures, case management systems, firm policies, and performance expectations.
- Conduct mock hearings, strategy sessions, and legal training as needed.
- Identify performance concerns, recurring errors, training needs, or operational risks and report them to firm leadership.
- Recommend case reassignment, escalation, additional support, coaching, or corrective action when necessary.
- Assist management with attorney evaluations, department procedures, legal templates, and quality-control standards.
- Serve as the primary escalation point for complex, urgent, or high-risk removal matters.
Client Communication and Case Management
- Conduct consultations, strategy meetings, and required callbacks.
- Clearly advise clients regarding legal options, risks, responsibilities, timelines, and potential outcomes.
- Address escalated client concerns and reinforce realistic expectations regarding representation.
- Ensure that all court deadlines, filing requirements, biometrics, and internal deadlines are met.
- Document case activity, legal decisions, client communications, deadlines, and court outcomes in the firm’s case management system.
- Maintain organized and complete electronic and court files.
- Escalate appellate, federal litigation, or highly complex matters to the appropriate attorney when necessary.
Compliance and Professional Responsibility
- Stay current on immigration laws, regulations, EOIR procedures, agency policies, and binding legal precedent.
- Ensure compliance with confidentiality, ethics, professional responsibility, and court requirements.
- Identify and report potential conflicts of interest, missed deadlines, fraud concerns, ethical violations, or malpractice risks.
- Perform additional duties as assigned based on the legal and operational needs of the firm.
Minimum Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school.
- Active license and good standing with a U.S. state, territory, or District of Columbia bar.
- Minimum of seven years of immigration law experience, including substantial removal defense and courtroom experience.
- Experience handling Master Calendar and Individual or Merits Hearings.
- Prior experience supervising, mentoring, or reviewing the work of attorneys.
- Advanced knowledge of removal defense, asylum, cancellation of removal, waivers, adjustment of status, and criminal immigration matters.
- Strong legal research, writing, advocacy, leadership, and case-management skills.
- Ability to manage an active caseload while supervising multiple attorneys.
- Professional fluency in English; bilingual English and Spanish proficiency is preferred.

Supervisory Responsibilities
The Senior Immigration Removal Attorney supervises Removal Attorneys and may provide direction to paralegals and legal assistants assigned to removal matters. Responsibilities include case assignments case load, strategy approval, filing review, workload monitoring, training, performance feedback, and escalation of legal or operational concerns.
