Job Overview

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and hands-on Dining Services Director to lead all aspects of dining operations within a senior living and healthcare environment. This role is responsible for overseeing daily culinary and dining services, ensuring high-quality food production, exceptional resident satisfaction, regulatory compliance, food safety, staffing coordination, and efficient department operations.

The ideal candidate will have experience in both front-of-house dining service and back-of-house kitchen operations, a passion for hospitality, strong organizational skills, and the ability to lead by example. This position is well-suited for someone who enjoys a combination of cooking, team leadership, staff scheduling, and operational oversight.

Essential Responsibilities

Culinary & Dining Operations

Oversee daily dining and culinary operations to ensure efficient meal service and resident satisfaction.
Ensure all food is prepared, presented, and served according to established quality and food safety standards.
Support kitchen production and assist with cooking as needed.
Coordinate food service for resident events, special functions, and community gatherings.
Maintain menus, recipes, production records, policies, procedures, and dietary resources.
Monitor food quality, portion control, sanitation practices, and service execution.
Ensure compliance with all applicable health department, state, and federal regulations.

Team Leadership & Staffing

Develop staffing schedules that support operational needs while maintaining labor efficiency.
Determine staffing requirements and assign personnel appropriately for each shift.
Participate in recruiting, interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training dining services team members.
Provide coaching, performance feedback, and ongoing development opportunities.
Assist in resolving employee performance concerns and implementing corrective action plans when necessary.
Foster a positive team culture focused on service, accountability, and resident-centered care.

Inventory, Purchasing & Budget Management

Manage food and supply inventories to maintain appropriate stock levels.
Order food, equipment, and supplies from approved vendors.
Monitor food and labor costs and identify opportunities for operational efficiencies.
Assist in developing and managing departmental budgets.
Recommend equipment purchases and operational improvements as needed.

Safety & Compliance

Ensure kitchen, dining rooms, storage areas, and service stations remain clean, safe, and organized.
Maintain compliance with all food handling, sanitation, infection control, and workplace safety requirements.
Ensure proper labeling, storage, and handling of hazardous materials and cleaning chemicals.
Maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and required documentation.

Additional Duties

Participate in inspections, audits, and surveys as required.
Perform other duties as assigned to support the overall success of the community.

Desired Qualifications & Experience

Required

Experience in both back-of-house kitchen operations and front-of-house dining service.
Strong cooking and food preparation experience.
Experience developing and managing employee schedules.
Experience working in senior living, healthcare dining, skilled nursing, assisted living, hospitality, or a related food service environment.
Knowledge of food safety, sanitation standards, and regulatory compliance requirements.
Ability to effectively communicate with residents, families, staff, vendors, and leadership teams.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and basic computer applications.

Preferred

Previous supervisory or management experience in dining services, culinary operations, hospitality, healthcare, or a related setting.
Food Service Manager Certification or ServSafe Manager Certification.
Associate's Degree, Culinary Degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Ability to lead and motivate teams in a fast-paced environment.
Strong organizational, scheduling, and time-management skills.
Ability to make sound decisions independently.
Excellent customer service and hospitality mindset.
Ability to build positive relationships with residents, families, and team members.
Strong problem-solving and conflict-resolution abilities.
Fluent in English, both verbal and written.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

This position may involve exposure to kitchen equipment, temperature changes, cleaning chemicals, food allergens, and healthcare environments.

Physical Requirements

Frequently lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
Occasionally lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
Frequently push or pull up to 30 pounds.
Occasionally push or pull up to 50 pounds.
Bend, stoop, twist, reach, stand, and walk for extended periods.
Alternate between standing and sitting throughout the workday.

Additional Requirements

Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as operational needs require.
