This is a temporary grant funded role with an anticipated end date of 12/31/2029.
Position Summary:
The Green Schools Coordinator will provide Portland Public Schools with project management and community engagement support within the Department of Climate Justice, Energy, and Sustainability to support green schoolyard improvement projects across the district. This position is responsible for working across the school system, in collaboration with internal departments as well as community partners, to support empowering, educational, and engaging experiences for individuals in our school communities who will utilize and benefit from the creation of these new green schoolyards.
Representative Duties:

Manage the development and updating of budgets, proposals, agreements, and contract documents with vendors and partners throughout the construction and design process of green school yards.

Support district-wide goals around outdoor learning and green schoolyards initiatives laid out in the Climate Crisis Response Policy (Goals 1.3, 3.1, 3.3)

Partner with curriculum staff to align existing curriculum across all core subjects and grade levels with lessons that can be performed outside on or near school grounds.

Serve as a primary point of contact with school garden teachers, staff, volunteers, and advocates across the District.

Conduct community engagement and outreach to ensure that stakeholders throughout each step of the design process.

Seek out and secure opportunities for environmental education and green schoolyards recognition and leadership programs at the local, state, and national levels.

Partner with the Communications Department to share out successes through the Department’s existing channels, including website blog posts, newsletter updates, and social media posts.

Assist the Climate Justice Student Projects Coordinator and the PCEF Capital Projects Manager with timely and thoughtful implementation of various Portland Clean Energy Fund (PCEF) funded projects.

Support the planning and implementation of annual Community Care Days in August of each year.

Perform other sustainability and climate justice related duties as assigned
Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in sustainability, education, resource conservation, social sciences, business, AND three (3) years of experience working in sustainability, agriculture/horticulture, educational facilities, municipalities, or other public agencies supporting diverse communities.

Project or program management experience is desirable.

Experience in justice-centered community engagement or community-based design is preferred.
Additional Skills:

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage diverse stakeholders.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook, and web-based platforms.

Ability to identify and recommend sustainability best practices in schools.
