River View Cemetery has been a trusted steward of Portland's heritage since 1882, serving individuals in an exceptionally peaceful setting near the city center. Run by a non-profit association, River View is one of Portland’s oldest endowment care cemeteries, maintained with the utmost concern for both natural beauty and family legacy. River View Cemetery Funeral Home works together with the cemetery on the grounds of our historic landmark, providing professional, respectful, dignified, and compassionate service by honoring lives lived at the time of need or by offering options for pre-planning.
River View Cemetery Funeral Home is a for-profit that operates with its own Board of Directors, but as a wholly owned subsidiary of River View Cemetery, each year the profits of the funeral home are available to cemetery to help support this historic landmark serving the Portland community.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will be collaborative working with administration, cemetery, grounds and funeral home teams. They will have experience in funeral service innovation and provide exceptional customer service.
Responsibilities
- Conduct funeral and memorial ceremonies in a professional and compassionate manner
- Carry out funeral services from retrieval of the deceased to final disposition, while adhering to the Company’s policies, procedures, and protocols
- Prepare print material for memorial services
- Identify and arrange for any personalization and customization for clients
- Ensure that all federal, state and local regulations related to the funeral industry are followed
- Prepare the memorial area for the family before the services start
- Ensure that flowers and other memorabilia are returned to the family after services
- Maintain reverence and respect for the deceased at all times
- Actively participate in trainings and strictly enforce all logging, identification, casketing and cremation procedures
- Manage At-Need accounts receivable
- Assist in the cleaning and maintenance of the facilities, grounds, or vehicles
- Complete embalming, disinfecting, dressing, preparing and casketing the deceased using appropriate precautions and OSHA standards in a manner that honors the deceased
Education, Certifications, and Licensure
- Must be a licensed funeral director and embalmer or the ability to obtain a state license.
- Requires graduation from an accredited school of embalming or mortuary science.
Experience & Requirements
- At least one (1) year industry experience in the applicable discipline
- Experience working in a cemetery and/or combination funeral and cemetery facility is preferred.
- Professional interpersonal skills as well as cultural sensitivity and tactfulness to interact with a variety of cultures and language barriers.
- Maintain a premier level of customer satisfaction
- Strong integrity and ability to respect the privacy of our client families by keeping confidential information private
- Proficiency in MS Office suite that includes mail, Word, Excel & Power Point, in addition to the ability to use the Company’s funeral specific software
- Professional and excellent communication skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Willingness to participate in community and cemetery events
- Understanding of our funeral services and products available
- Must have a flexible schedule, professional appearance, good attitude, and be a team player
- Compassionate towards others
- Ability to lift 75 pounds, bend, and otherwise physically perform the typical duties as required by this position
