GENERAL SUMMARY
Works under the supervision of the Pharmacist Supervisor and Community Pharmacy Manager. The Pharmacy Technician Coordinator is responsible for coordinating advanced pharmacy technician activities across SOMC Community Pharmacy Services. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and high-quality delivery of specialized pharmacy initiatives, including Medication Therapy Management (MTM), Adherence Packaging, Hospice Services, Pharmacy Education, Training, and Onboarding, and other clinical or operational programs. The Pharmacy Technician Coordinator serves as a subject-matter expert for the advanced service they’re involved with, leading education and training initiatives for pharmacy staff for these service lines. To ensure expertise, the Pharmacy Technician Coordinator obtains advanced certifications and credentials to maintain expertise in specialized areas. This position works collaboratively with pharmacy leadership to optimize workflows, support clinical programs, and enhance patient outcomes. Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
- Completion of a board approved Pharmacy Technician training program or National Certification required
- Completion of Advanced Certified Pharmacy Technician courses and examinations offered through PTCB or NPTA/BPTS
- Achievement of 90% or higher on SOMC's Competency Assessment for Increasing Technician Responsibilities
Licensure:
- Successful completion of National Qualification test required (PTCB or NHA)
- Successful completion of Advanced Certified Pharmacy technician courses and examinations (PTCB or NPTA/BPTS) to obtain credentialing of CPhT-Adv.
- Successful completion of the Certified Pharmacy Technician Educator courses and examinations to obtain credentialing of CPTEd, if required (Training, Education, & Onboarding Coordinator).
- For Ohio: State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy Certified Technician Registration required
- For Kentucky: State of Kentucky Board of Pharmacy Technician Registration Required
Experience:
- National Pharmacy Technician certification with 2 years of national pharmacy technician certification work experience within the last 8 years required.
- National Pharmacy Technician certification with 2 years of experience educating, instructing, or training in pharmacy if required (Training, Education, & Onboarding Coordinator).
- 90 days of experience as a SOMC pharmacy technician, with passing of introductory period with no noted concerns.
JOB SPECIFIC DUTIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
The following is a summary of the major job duties of this job. Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below. Specific activities may change from time to time.
1. Profiles physician orders in computer system for pharmacist review.
2. Provides prompt, efficient, and courteous service, answer telephone inquiries; takes messages when necessary or directs inquiry to the appropriate person.
3. Responsible for general cleanliness of work area/department.
4. Ability to recognize narcotic discrepancies and perform audits as necessary.
5. Delivers medications to Meds to Beds patients (in Emergency Room).
6. Enters patient charges/credits into computer profile system.
7. Checks incoming orders of medications and pharmacy supplies against purchase requisitions for accuracy and completeness.
8. Reviews patient medication profile to identify medications available through Patient Assistance.
9. Contacts drug manufacturer for any application forms needed and/or enrolling patients for various programs over the phone/internet.
10. Performs medication reconciliation by interviewing patients and/or family member to validate home medications.
11. Contacts pharmacies, nursing homes, and the Veteran Affairs for a complete list of home medications.
12. Obtains necessary income documentation from patients for various programs.
13. Completes applications and obtains prescriptions for each manufacturer's applications. May coordinate with physician regarding and substitutions and obtains signed applications/prescriptions.
14. Educates patient on his/her responsibility for re-ordering prescriptions.
15. Communicates with Purchasing Agent regarding stock levels and items needed to assure adequate inventory. Assures stock rotation and placement of items in appropriate storage areas.
16. Transcribing verbal prescription orders via phone call or voicemail for non-controlled medication orders.
17. Sending and Receiving prescription transfers for non-controlled medication orders.
18. Calling for clarification on prescription orders if professional judgement isn’t warranted.
19. Calling for prescription refill requests if the original order remains unchanged.
20. Performing Intermediate inventory management functions such as preparing dead inventory and excess inventory returns.
21. Administering vaccinations as allowed by the law.
22. Performing Technician Product Verification or similar auditing duties as allowed by the law.
23. Performing advanced inventory functions such as PAR level management, inventory redistribution, and implementation and completion of inventory saving initiatives.
24. Perform MTM services, including CMR and TIP documentation.
25. Owns and oversees specialized pharmacy programs
26. Ensures program compliance with federal, state, and SOMC policies.
27. Serves as the primary point of contact and expert resource for program-related questions.
28. Develops and delivers training for pharmacy technicians and support staff on advanced programs.
29. Provides competency assessments, continuing education, and mentorship to team members.
30. Supports staff in obtaining advanced certifications relevant to their roles and programs.
31. Monitors program metrics, workflow adherence, and quality standards.
32. Collaborates with pharmacy leadership to identify areas for improvement and implement corrective actions.
33. Ensures documentation aligns with regulatory requirements, SOMC policies, and accreditation standards.
34. Streamlines processes for advanced pharmacy services to maximize efficiency and patient safety.
35. Supports implementation of new technologies, programs, and operational initiatives.
36. Assists with troubleshooting and problem-solving within specialized programs.
37. Completion of onboarding and ongoing training for staff on advanced programs.
38. Achievement of targeted program metrics and compliance with quality standards.
39. Travel between SOMC pharmacy locations may be required for program oversight or training.
40. Occasional evening or weekend training or program sessions may be required.
41. The Pharmacy Technician Coordinator may participate in committees, quality initiatives, and organizational education programs as assigned.
