Position Overview

We're looking for an experienced chef who is passionate about great food and wants to help busy families eat healthier without sacrificing flavor.

At The Symbiotic Chef, our chefs prepare fresh, seasonal, scratch-made meals in clients' homes, creating customized menus based on each client's tastes, dietary preferences, and health goals.

Rather than cooking the same menu every day, our chefs build lasting relationships with recurring weekly clients and create menus that evolve over time. Many find this to be one of the most rewarding aspects of the role.

This position offers an opportunity to leave behind the demands of restaurant life while continuing to cook at a high level. You'll enjoy creative freedom, meaningful client relationships, a high degree of independence, and a healthier work-life balance.

Compensation

$200–$300+ per client session
Most client sessions last approximately 3–4 hours
Most chefs complete 1–2 client sessions per day
Established chefs commonly earn approximately $60,000–$75,000+ annually
$1,000 paid onboarding stipend

New chefs begin with a smaller number of recurring clients after completing onboarding, then gradually establish to 5–8 recurring weekly clients over a period of 3–6 months.

The Symbiotic Chef LLC. is a growing personal chef company specializing in healthy, customized in-home meal preparation for busy families and professionals throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

We believe healthy food should never mean sacrificing flavor. Our chefs prepare fresh, seasonal, scratch-made cuisine using high-quality ingredients and thoughtful menu planning.

Our mission is simple: make healthy eating easier while delivering an exceptional client experience built on professionalism, trust, and lasting relationships.

Paid Onboarding

Unlike many personal chef companies, we provide structured onboarding, standardized systems, and hands-on mentorship designed to help chefs succeed from their very first client.

Your paid onboarding includes:

In-person shadowing
Systems and workflow training
Online educational modules
Approximately 45 hours completed over 1–2 weeks
$1,000 onboarding stipend upon successful completion

Responsibilities

Design customized weekly menus based on each client's dietary preferences and health goals
Shop for groceries using client-preferred stores and ingredient standards
Prepare, portion, and package meals in clients' homes
Label meals and provide reheating instructions
Leave each kitchen clean, organized, and ready for the client
Build positive, professional relationships with recurring clients
Adapt menus using client feedback and seasonal ingredients
Track grocery purchases and shop efficiently
Read nutrition labels and understand ingredient sourcing
Manage scheduling, Google Docs, Gmail, and digital client information independently

Ideal Candidate Qualifications

2+ years of experience as a chef, sous chef, executive chef, personal chef, or similar culinary role
Strong culinary fundamentals across a variety of cuisines and cooking techniques
Experience preparing health-conscious meals and accommodating dietary preferences
Comfortable developing and adapting recipes based on seasonal ingredients and client feedback
Ability to work independently and confidently in client homes
Excellent organization, cleanliness, professionalism, and time management
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Comfortable using Google Docs and Gmail
Active ServSafe Certification (or equivalent)
Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle
Must own or be willing to purchase basic cooking equipment and a cooler
Must successfully complete a background check before onboarding

Schedule & Work Environment

Client sessions occur during daytime hours Monday through Friday
Grocery shopping is completed before each client session
Typical client sessions last approximately 3–4 hours
Client schedules build gradually as recurring clients are assigned
Flexibility and reliability are essential, as client schedules may vary slightly from week to week
Optional private event opportunities may be available for chefs interested in additional income
