Full Job Description

Job Summary

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Medical Director to lead clinical operations, oversee medical staff, and ensure the delivery of exceptional patient care within a healthcare organization.

The Medical Director provides clinical and medical leadership for Step One’s 822 Outpatient Program and the 599 OMH Program. Responsible for oversight of psychiatric and medical services, ensuring clinical quality, regulatory compliance (OMH/OASAS), best-practice care, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to support program development, staffing, and overall patient safety.

Key Responsibilities:

· Provide medical leadership and clinical supervision for all psychiatric and medical services across the 822 Outpatient and 599 OMH programs.

· Establish, review, and enforce clinical policies, protocols, medication management guidelines, and evidence-based practices.

· Oversee psychiatric assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, psychotropic medication management, lab monitoring, and medical emergencies.

· Supervise and mentor psychiatrists, nurse practitioners, RNs, and other medical staff; provide clinical consultation to clinicians and the Intake Coordinator regarding medical appropriateness for admissions.

· Ensure that medical documentation meets OMH/OASAS and agency standards; participate in audits, chart reviews, and quality improvement initiatives.

· Collaborate with Program Directors and Clinical Supervisors to integrate medical care into multidisciplinary treatment plans and to ensure continuity between intake, medical, and psychosocial services.

· Review and approve clinical protocols for crisis response, prescribing practices, metabolic monitoring, controlled substance management, and infection control.

· Serve as primary medical signatory for medical policies, clinical risk management, and utilization review; provide oversight for medication formulary decisions and standing orders.

· Lead or participate in hiring, credentialing, privileging, and performance evaluations for medical staff.

· Participate in leadership meetings, strategic planning, program development, training, and agency-wide clinical governance.

· Ensure compliance with HIPAA, state and federal regulations, and payer requirements; interface with external regulatory bodies during surveys and audits.

· Be available for clinical consultation and, as needed, on-call coverage for high-acuity cases.

Qualifications:

· Medical degree (MD or DO) and board certification in Psychiatry preferred; board-certified in relevant specialty acceptable.

· Active and unrestricted medical license in the state of practice; DEA registration as required.

· Minimum 5 years’ clinical experience in psychiatry or behavioral health, with at least 2 years in a leadership or supervisory role preferred.

· Demonstrated knowledge of OMH and OASAS regulations, documentation standards, and community behavioral health systems.

· Experience with outpatient and community mental health populations, including co-occurring substance use disorders.

· Strong leadership, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.

· Proficiency with Electronic Health Records and clinical documentation review.
