Pay: $50,000 - $75,000per year (based on experience) plus commissions

Job Type: Full-time

Location: Portsmouth, RI 02871 (In-person)

Work Location: On-site at our family-owned retail garden center

Domina’s Agway is a family-owned and operated lawn, garden, pet, and pond supply business in Portsmouth, RI. We’re passionate about working with Mother Nature — delivering high-quality, environmentally friendly products and services that help our customers succeed in their backyards, gardens, and landscapes.

Our retail store serves as a true community hub for local gardeners, pet owners, wildlife enthusiasts, and water feature lovers. We also run a thriving landscape construction division (specializing in Aquascape-style ponds, hardscapes, and eco-friendly designs) and a greenhouse production division that grows the majority of the plants we sell. This creates exciting cross-division opportunities for the right leader.

We’re looking for a hands-on Retail Manager who thrives in a fast-paced retail environment, loves building strong teams, and is excited to embrace technology and help grow new areas of the business.

The Opportunity

This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who enjoys rolling up their sleeves on the sales floor while developing people and driving results. You’ll lead daily retail operations, mentor a team of associates, and contribute to broader business growth — including technology upgrades, marketing initiatives, and expansion into landscape/pond services.

Hands-on and practical — comfortable jumping in to help with customers, merchandising, or seasonal rushes.
Tech-curious and forward-thinking — interested in learning and implementing new tools (social media, e-commerce, inventory systems, digital marketing).
Eager to grow with the business — open to learning across retail, landscape construction, pond maintenance, and greenhouse operations.
Strong communicator with a customer-first mindset and natural ability to motivate others.

Key Responsibilities

Hands-On Team Leadership & Development: Build, train, mentor, and inspire a high-performing retail team. Focus on strong team building, accountability, and creating a positive, supportive culture where everyone grows.
Sales Floor Leadership: Drive daily operations, customer service excellence, and visual merchandising in our garden center. Identify sales trends and keep the store stocked and inviting.
Inventory & Operations: Manage inventory levels, ordering, and loss prevention with a practical, results-oriented approach.
Community & Education: Lead in-store seminars, workshops, and outreach on lawn/garden, pet, and pond topics to build customer loyalty and community connections.
Technology & Growth: Embrace and help implement retail technology, social media marketing, online sales tools, delivery coordination, and other digital initiatives. Contribute ideas for expanding services across our retail and landscape divisions.
Hiring & Culture: Own recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing training to maintain a strong, cohesive team aligned with our values.

Qualifications

5+ years of retail management or strong customer service leadership experience (garden center, nursery, home improvement, or similar preferred).
Proven track record of building and developing successful teams — hands-on leadership style required.
Experience with inventory management, sales trend analysis, and driving retail performance.
Passion for nature, gardening, pets, ponds, and sustainable practices.
Basic computer proficiency and genuine interest in learning new technology platforms (POS systems, digital marketing, e-commerce, Google Business tools, etc.).
Strong communication skills and ability to engage both customers and team members.
Ability to commute to Portsmouth, RI (relocation support considered for exceptional candidates).
