WHAT YOU’LL DO IN THIS POSITION
Job Summary:
The Associate Clerkship Director for Surgery supports the Clerkship Director for S urgery with academic leadership, oversight, and continuous quality improvement for the required Phase 2 clerkship in Surgery within the BYU School of Medicine ( BYU M ED ). This individual helps ensure the delivery of a Christ-centered, evidence-based clinical learning experience that meets LCME standards, upholds institutional values, and prepares students for compassionate, competent, and spiritually grounded medical practice.
This position has three distinct phases:
- Phase 1 : F rom now t o the matriculation of the first school of medicine clas s, the role will focus on developing clerkship curriculum as a member of the Phase 2 working group. This is expected to require approximately 5 % effort ( 0. 05 FTE) and may be compensated on a con tracted/stipend basis.
- Phase 2 : F rom the matriculation of the first class until the start of Phas e 2 Clerkships (~14 months) , the focus will shift to recruitment, faculty development, and preparation of all resources needed for the clerkship . This includes working with our clinical affiliates to develop the training environment, including call rooms, if needed, and study and charting spaces. It also includes working with the Clerkship Director , curriculum committee , and Phase 2 Director to develop didactic materials , required clinical experiences, and evaluate and improve the curriculum. This ph ase is expected to require approximately 1 0% effort (0. 1 FTE) and will be compens ated at the app ropriate part-time ra te.
- Phase 3 : Once the students begin the clerkship, the role will focus on running the clerkship under the direction of the Clerkship Director . This phase is expected to require approximately 2 0% ef fort (0. 2 FTE) and wi ll be compensated at the appropriate part-tim e rate.
Under the direction of the Clerkship Director , t he Associate Clerkship Director will collaborate closely with clinical affiliated in stitution leaders and staff , site directors, preceptors, and BYU M ED leadership to ensure consistency , fairness , and excellence across all training environments.
Duties and Expectations:
1. Leadership & Administration
Provide s input on and helps execute the strategic and operational vision for the Surgery clerkship across all clinical sites.
Maintain compliance with LCME standards related to clerkship design, supervision, assessment, and student experience.
Lead annual clerkship review processes and implement continuous quality improvement (CQI) initiatives.
Coordinate with the Clerkship Director for Surgery, Associate Dean of Curriculum ( AD C ) , Phase 2 Director, and curriculum committees
2. Curriculum Design & Oversight
Under the direction of the Curriculum Committee and Clerkship Director for Surgery , d evelop, review, an d update c lerkship goals, learning o bjectives , inst ructiona l activities, syllabi, and r equired clinical experiences.
Ensure alignment with BYU M ED competencies, Medical Education Program Objectives ( MEPO s) , and mission-centered outcomes.
Provide clear expectations for students and preceptors.
Assist in the creation of student evaluations for the clerkship.
3. Student Assessment & Evaluation
Help o versee assessment tools including direct observation, narrative evaluations, workplace-based assessments, OSCEs, and exams .
Ensure fairness, transparency, and reliability in grading.
Provide timely feedback and identify students in difficulty and refer students to the Office of Student Progress.
Participate in remediation efforts and decisions .
4. Faculty & Preceptor Development
O rient and support preceptors across clerkship sites.
Coordinate and assist in ongoing faculty development with the BYU M ED Director of Facult y Development, and other school leaders focused on teaching, assessment, and Christlike mentorship.
Works with their specialty Associate Chair to recruit, train, and evaluate faculty /preceptors involved in the clerkship teaching.
5. Site Coordination & Clinical Partnerships
Maintain regular communication with site directors and partners.
Help o versee equitable distribution of patient encounters and procedures.
Help e nsure all sites meet BYU M ED expectations for learning environment and student safety.
Assist with preceptor and site recruitment and retention.
6. Learning Environment & Student Experience
Promote belonging, clinical excellence, spiritual growth, and professionalism.
Help m onitor workloads, duty hours, and mistreatment concerns.
Serve as a mentor and primary faculty contact during the specialty rot ation
7. Scholarly & Institutional Contributions

Required Degree:
Required Qualifications:
Eligibility for Utah medical licensure.
Active clinical practice with a BYU MED clinical affiliate within 50 miles of the BYU campus.
Commitment to education and mentorship.
Ability to support BYU and Church standards.
Preferred Qualifications:
Teaching or clerkship leadership experience.
Experience in curriculum development or faculty development.
Experience in distributed clinical education.
Educational scholarship or QI experience.
