This is a professional position working under the direction of the Software Development Manager. The on-prem Database Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining the City s IBM DB2 database environment on a mainframe. The DBA ensures optimal database performance, security, availability, and reliability while supporting application development efforts through stored procedures and business logic implementation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
Administers and maintains the City s IBM DB2 database environment on a mainframe to ensure optimal performance, security, and availability.
Designs, develops, and maintains IBM DB2 stored procedures that support business logic and application functionality.
Conducts performance tuning, indexing, and optimization to improve database efficiency and responsiveness.
Implements and maintains backup and recovery procedures, failover configurations, and disaster recovery plans to ensure data integrity and availability.
Manages database security and access controls to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with applicable standards.
Collaborates with software developers and system administrators to support application architecture and system design.
Participates in new system design, implementation, migrations, and major upgrades to ensure seamless database integration and performance.
Monitors and troubleshoots database-related performance issues, failures, and anomalies, providing timely resolutions.
Supports FireDAC, Delphi, and Pascal-based applications, with preference given to candidates with experience in these technologies.
Works with Delphi, .NET, and Node.js developers to ensure proper database integration with applications.
Develops and maintains documentation for database configurations, procedures, security controls, and best practices.
Provides technical guidance and training to internal teams regarding database administration best practices.
Performs other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Significant knowledge of IBM DB2 on mainframes, including database administration, configuration, and optimization.
Proficiency in IBM DB2 SQL and stored procedures for business logic implementation.
Strong understanding of database security principles, including authentication, authorization, encryption, and compliance requirements.
Experience with performance tuning, indexing, partitioning, and query optimization techniques.
Familiarity with .NET and Node.js for database-driven applications.
Knowledge of backup and disaster recovery strategies, including failover configurations and high-availability solutions.
Ability to troubleshoot complex database performance issues and implement effective solutions.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams to support software development and IT operations.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to document technical procedures and database configurations.
Ability to manage multiple tasks and assignments in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions.
Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in decision-making.
Ability to provide technical guidance and support to developers and other IT staff.
Must be available during regular business hours and may be required to work occasional evenings or be on-call for database-related incidents.
Bachelor s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field from an accredited institution.
Preferred minimum of four (4) years of experience in SQL database administration on mainframes.
Experience developing and maintaining SQL stored procedures and database-driven applications.
Preferred experience with Delphi, Pascal, and RPG.
Experience in database performance tuning, backup/recovery, and disaster recovery planning.
Experience implementing database security best practices.
IBM DB2 certifications are a plus.
Maintains a valid Utah Driver s License. Must observe all traffic regulations, follow City policy, and be a safe, courteous, and responsible driver while operating City vehicles.
Individual starting salary will depend on qualifications, certifications, and experience.
