Founded in 1973, the J. Reuben Clark Law School and Law Library at Brigham Young University (BYU Law) has grown into one of the nation's leading law schools. WHAT WE DO
The Howard W. Hunter Law Library is dedicated to the teaching, research, and service-oriented mission of BYU Law. We provide legal research, reference and instruction services, and access to an outstanding collection of U.S., foreign, comparative, and international law.
The Law Library has assembled a staff of experienced law librarians and Utah's largest collection of law books and other legal resources. The library also serves the legal information needs of the broader community.
SUMMARY
The Collections and Access Services Assistant is responsible for the maintenance and organization of library materials, including ensuring access to the collection and providing support in meeting the necessary requirements for accreditation. This position also assists the Access Services Librarian with a variety of circulation tasks and projects.
This position is temporary and is anticipated to last no more than 12 months.
WHAT YOU'LL DO IN THIS POSITION
- The Collections and Circulation Assistant is responsible for the maintenance and organization of library materials, including ensuring access to the collection and providing support in meeting the necessary requirements for accreditation. You'll be tasked with a variety of responsibilities and projects:
- Library collection maintenance, including ensuring access to materials, shelf space management, book restoration, etc.
- Educate patrons and staff on library circulation policies and procedures
- Assist Access Services Librarian and Student Services Librarian with inter- and intra-organization relations
- Assist with digital and other projects under the direction of the Access Services Librarian and Student Services Librarian
- Assist with and maintain accurate shelving statistics
WHAT QUALIFIES YOU FOR THIS ROLE?
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor's degree OR equivalent years of education and work experience
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree AND library experience OR Bachelor's degree AND 3 years of professional work experience
SKILLS, CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, ETC.
Required:
- Excellent customer service skills
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with coworkers and other university personnel
- Demonstrated ability to proactively review and modify processes as needs and technology change
- Demonstrated ability to easily learn and apply new technology applications including relevant digitization hardware and software such as scanners, digital photocopiers, and file management and transmission software
- Excellent professional written and verbal communication
- Detail-oriented, thorough, and can demonstrate the ability to process transactions with a high degree of accuracy
- Ability to mentor student employees in high-quality workplace skills
- Self-motivated: Ability to complete many different types of tasks with little or no supervision
- Dedicated: Ability to do repetitive tasks with a positive attitude
- Persistent: Ability to go the extra mile to meet a need
- Creative: Ability to generate multiple solutions to solve a problem
- Knowledgeable: Ability to know and enforce department/law library policies and processes
- General knowledge of collection maintenance functions (shelving, stacks management, shifting, measurement, inventory, etc.)
- Ability to support employees in most areas of the department and other areas of the library
- Provide others with necessary, correct, and timely information
- Computer literate: Ability to do various computer tasks and an aptitude for learning new computer programs, including, but not limited to: SIRSI Workflows (Symphony), computer hardware (barcode scanners, PCs, book scanners, etc.), and software (MS Office, editing software, Adobe products, etc.)
- Ability to learn and uphold department policies and procedures
Preferred:
- Customer service experience with academic clientele such as students, faculty, and university employees
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Demonstrated history of innovation and assessment of processes and workflows
- Ability to create statistical reports and present information to stakeholders
- Familiarity with searching, retrieving, interpreting, and using the library's cataloging records in a variety of national library systems/software (e.g. SIRSI Symphony, OCLC)

Pay Level : 48
Typical Starting Pay Range: $20.25 to $26.50 an hour
The actual compensation offered will take into consideration internal equity and may vary based on the candidate’s job-related experience, knowledge, skills, and other relevant factors. Candidates with very significant work-related experience may receive an offer higher than the posted typical range.
