Full Job Description

Tired of being ‘just the reviewer’? Step into a remote Tax Manager role where you own the client relationship, drive the tax strategy, and mentor junior staff.

Apex Business Consulting was founded in 2020 by Jonas, a CPA and MBT who spent years in both public accounting and as an auditor for the Department of Revenue. We’ve grown into one of the fastest-growing tax and accounting practices in the Charlotte area and, currently remotely serving small and mid-size businesses across 42 states.

Role:

We're looking for a Tax Manager who wants to own a client book, develop a team, and continue to grow as a leader in the company. You will oversee a portfolio of 500–700 tax returns, manage client relationships directly, and work alongside Jonas as you learn and eventually lead the tax strategy conversations. Initially, you will own preparing and reviewing tax returns.

We encourage and protect both. We’re adding to our team because we're scaling, and we need a Tax Manager who can grow with us.

Responsibilities:

Client Engagement

Own the client experience for your portfolio: communication, deliverables, and relationships.
Handle client-facing responses to tax notices and federal or state examinations
Handle initial client escalations, with support as needed from team and leadership

Tax Preparation and Review

Own the full process initially from preparing and reviewing tax returns, primarily: 1040, 1120S, and 1065, occasionally 1120 and 1041.
Role overtime will shift toward review, client-facing, and tax strategy as direct reports are added.
Reviewing client financials before prep, identifying red flags in P&Ls and balance sheets, and resolving issues before a return moves forward.
Provide written feedback to junior preparers on return quality when capacity allows

Tax Strategy & Development

Prepare forward-looking tax projections and planning documents for client meetings
Apply relevant strategies during the review process, not just checking for accuracy
Build toward owning the full tax strategy conversation with clients over time

Team Development & Oversight

Mentor and coach junior tax accountants on technical work
Maintain quality standards across your team and help train teammates

Requirements:

5+ years of experience in public accounting
Experience working for mid-sized or regional firm
Experience independently preparing 1040, 1120S, and 1065 returns; 1120 and 1041 experience is a strong plus
Comfortable reviewing P&L statements / balance sheets and resolving what you find.
Experience being client facing and being the main point of contact.
Experience training or mentoring more junior team members.
Cloud-based tax software required
Applied tax strategy experience
CPA or MBT designation preferred
Russian speaking is a plus
Real estate and/or construction industry experience is a plus
Ownership mentality, with the ability to be a great team player and drive results.

Results:

Own and manage a portfolio of 500–700 tax returns
Complete returns with minimal errors and excellent client experience
Develop and mentor a team of junior tax accountants under you
Build toward leading more client-facing tax strategy meetings

Logistics:

Location: Remote (Charlotte, NC preferred, not required)

*This position is open to candidates based in the United States only.

Salary: $110,000–$145,000 base + performance-based bonus
