We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Director of Finance & Accounting to lead the financial operations of our established small business. This position serves as the senior financial leader within the company and works directly with ownership to provide accurate financial information, maintain strong financial controls, manage cash flow and tax obligations, and support strategic business decisions.
This is not simply an accounting or bookkeeping position. The ideal candidate is comfortable operating at both a Controller and CFO level within a small-business environment—someone who can oversee the details of day-to-day accounting while also understanding the larger financial picture of the organization.
The Director of Finance & Accounting will oversee our in-house bookkeeper and take primary responsibility for financial reporting, month-end and year-end close, budgeting and forecasting, cash-flow management, tax compliance, sales-tax reporting and remittance, audits, and financial analysis.
This position reports directly to ownership and is expected to independently lead the company's finance and accounting function.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations and supervise the company's in-house bookkeeper.
- Ensure accurate maintenance of the general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and other accounting records.
- Manage and review monthly, quarterly, and year-end closing processes.
- Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements, including profit and loss statements, balance sheets, and cash-flow reports.
- Maintain accurate financial records and ensure transactions are properly classified and reconciled.
- Establish and maintain appropriate accounting procedures and internal financial controls.
- Identify discrepancies, unusual transactions, or financial concerns and resolve them promptly.
- Coordinate with outside accountants and tax professionals as necessary.
Cash Flow, Budgeting & Forecasting
- Actively manage and forecast company cash flow.
- Monitor cash requirements and provide ownership with visibility into upcoming financial obligations.
- Develop annual budgets and periodic financial forecasts.
- Compare actual financial performance against budgets and forecasts and explain significant variances.
- Analyze expenses, margins, profitability, and other key financial metrics.
- Identify opportunities to improve profitability, reduce unnecessary expenses, and strengthen financial performance.
- Assist ownership in evaluating major purchases, investments, contracts, and other financial commitments.
Tax & Compliance
- Manage preparation, filing, and timely remittance of applicable sales and use taxes.
- Maintain sales-tax records and reconcile sales-tax liabilities to accounting and sales systems.
- Coordinate federal, state, and local tax matters with outside tax professionals.
- Ensure required financial and tax filings are completed accurately and on time.
- Maintain documentation necessary to support tax filings, regulatory reporting, and audits.
- Coordinate and respond to financial, tax, insurance, regulatory, and other audits as necessary.
- Maintain awareness of applicable accounting, tax, and financial compliance requirements affecting the business.
Financial Leadership & Strategy
- Serve as the primary financial resource and advisor to ownership.
- Provide clear, practical financial analysis to support business decisions.
- Translate financial information into understandable recommendations for ownership and management.
- Identify financial risks and bring potential issues to ownership's attention before they become significant problems.
- Develop financial models and analyses for new opportunities, expansion, capital expenditures, or operational changes.
- Evaluate the financial impact of business decisions and provide recommendations based on data.
- Develop and monitor key financial performance indicators.
- Continuously evaluate accounting and financial processes and implement improvements where appropriate.
- Maintain a strong understanding of the overall financial health of the organization rather than focusing solely on historical accounting.
Team Oversight
- Directly supervise and provide guidance to the in-house bookkeeper.
- Review bookkeeping work for accuracy and completeness.
- Establish clear accounting procedures, deadlines, and responsibilities.
- Ensure appropriate separation of financial duties and internal controls.
- Serve as the escalation point for complex accounting and financial issues.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Significant experience in accounting, financial management, controllership, or a similar senior finance role.
- Previous experience independently managing the finance and accounting function for a small or mid-sized cannabis business strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and general accounting principles.
- Demonstrated experience preparing and analyzing financial statements.
- Experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow management, and financial analysis.
- Experience with sales-tax reporting and remittance.
- Experience working with outside CPAs, tax professionals, auditors, and regulatory agencies.
- Strong understanding of internal financial controls and accounting procedures.
- Advanced proficiency with QuickBooks On-line and Microsoft Excel.
- CPA or CMA designation is a plus but not required.
Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will be someone who enjoys being hands-on and taking ownership of the entire financial function of a business.
We are looking for someone who can move comfortably between reviewing a reconciliation or sales-tax filing and advising ownership about cash flow, profitability, budgeting, or a major business decision.
This position is particularly well suited for an experienced Controller, Finance Director, Accounting Director, or senior financial professional who enjoys the autonomy and variety of working within a privately held small-business environment.
The right person will be highly organized, analytical, dependable, and proactive. They should be comfortable identifying a financial problem, researching it, developing a solution, and bringing a recommendation to ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do.
Key Attributes
- High level of integrity and discretion with confidential financial information
- Strong attention to detail without losing sight of the overall financial picture
- Independent and self-directed
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent organizational and time-management abilities
- Comfortable managing multiple priorities and deadlines
- Able to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial executives
- Proactive rather than reactive
- Willing to be hands-on in a small-business environment
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability
