Job Summary:
The Human Resources Generalist assists and supports the Director of Human Resources with the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources Department. This position is responsible for supporting a wide range of HR functions, including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, benefits administration, compliance, and HR recordkeeping. This role contributes to fostering a positive workplace culture while supporting the Harry Chapin Food Bank's mission, values, and strategic objectives.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Job Specific
Recruitment & Talent Acquisition
- Coordinate the full-cycle recruitment process, including creating and posting job advertisements, reviewing applications, conducting candidate screenings, scheduling interviews, and facilitating selection processes.
- Collaboration with the Director of Human Resources and hiring managers to develop job descriptions, recruitment strategies, and interview guides.
- Conduct reference checks, background screenings, and pre-employment processes in accordance with organizational policies.
- Maintain applicant tracking records and ensure positive candidate experience throughout the hiring process.
Onboarding & Employee Integration
- Facilitate new hire onboarding, orientation, and employee introductions to ensure a successful transition into the organization.
- Prepare onboarding materials, employment documents, and system access requests.
- Conduct regular follow-up meetings with new employees during their introductory period to support engagement and retention.
- Maintain onboarding checklists and personnel files in compliance with organizational and legal requirements.
Employee Relations & Culture
- Serve as a resource for employees and managers regarding policies, procedures, workplace concerns, and employee relations matters.
- Assist with investigations involving employee complaints, workplace conflicts, policy violations, and disciplinary matters while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
- Assist in promoting employee engagement initiatives that support organizational culture, morale, retention, and recognition.
- Assist in coordinating employee appreciation events, wellness initiatives, and organizational celebrations.
Performance Management & Employee Development
- Support the administration of the annual performance review process, including timelines, documentation, manager training, and tracking completion.
- Monitor performance management documentation and ensure consistency and compliance across departments.
- Track employee training records and mandatory certification requirements.
Compensation, Benefits & HRIS Administration
- Assist with benefits administration, including enrollment, changes, qualifying life events, and employee inquiries.
- Support annual open enrollment activities and employee benefit education.
- Maintain accurate employee information within the Human Resources Information System (HRIS).
- Assist employees and managers with timekeeping, leave requests, payroll-related inquiries, and attendance tracking.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including FLSA, FMLA, ADA, EEO, OSHA, COBRA, and other applicable regulations.
- Maintain employee personnel files and HR records in accordance with legal retention requirements.
- Assist with policy development, revisions, implementation, and employee communication.
Leave Administration
- Coordinate and track employee leave requests, including FMLA, military leave, jury duty, bereavement, and other protected leaves.
- Ability to communicate leave eligibility, documentation requirements, and return-to-work procedures to employees and managers.
- Maintain accurate leave records and ensure compliance with applicable regulations and organizational policies.
Nonprofit Workforce Support
- Promote the organization's mission, values, and community-focused culture through employee engagement and recruitment efforts.
- Other duties as assigned by Director of Human Resources, Administration & Volunteers.

- Valid Florida Driver’s License
Specific to Position
- Associates degree in HR, Business, or related field.
- 3+ years of HR experience, preferably in nonprofit settings.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in HRIS and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and the upmost confidentiality.
· Ability to coordinate multiple projects/events and adhere to deadlines in a high-energy, fast-paced environment.
· Excellent organizational skills.
· Good written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
· Cooperative attitude, willingness to learn.
· Good customer service skills.
Working Conditions:
Work is primarily performed in a professional office environment with regular interaction with directors, employees, managers, and applicants. The position requires extensive computer use, the ability to manage multiple priorities, and the handling of confidential information with discretion. The HR Generalist will be the backup for receptionist coverage during lunch and vacations. Assist when required during emergency response operations. The position requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, and occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
Pay: $48,000.00 - $58,000.00 per year
