Looking for a real Welder/Fabricator — not a production welder. Must weld steel, stainless, and aluminum confidently and build assemblies from prints without hand‑holding.
WELDER / FABRICATOR — JOB SHOP
Dosco Sheet Metal – Millbury, MA In business since 1988 — 38 years strong
Dosco Sheet Metal is a small, family‑style fabrication shop. We’re a true job shop, not a production welding environment. Every day is different, and we need someone who can think, fit, build, and weld — not just pull a trigger.
If you can read blueprints, build assemblies independently, and weld steel, stainless, and aluminum with confidence, you’ll fit right in here.
If you struggle with any of those materials, this is not the right role. We need a complete welder, not a partial one.
Position Overview
We are looking for a skilled Welder/Fabricator who can take a print, understand it, fit the parts, solve problems, and weld the assembly with minimal distortion. This role requires strong fabrication judgment, especially since many of our customer prints do not include weld symbols. You must know how much weld is appropriate based on experience.
You will be working independently on a wide variety of custom jobs, from small brackets to complex guards.
Responsibilities
- Interpret blueprints, multi‑view drawings, callouts, and tolerances
- Assemble and weld parts independently according to blueprint specs
- Determine weld size and length when prints lack weld symbols
- Fit and align parts accurately, correcting fit‑up issues before welding
- Weld steel, stainless steel, and aluminum (MIG & TIG)
- Weld with minimal distortion using proper sequencing and heat control
- Perform finish grinding and part cleanup
- Prep material (cleaning, beveling, deburring)
- Verify dimensions and tolerances before welding
- Run shop equipment: drills, saws, shear
- Use tape measure, digital caliper, combination square
- Convert decimals to fractions and use basic shop math
- Maintain a clean, organized work area
- Communicate clearly with shop leadership about job status
- Work safely and follow all welding/fabrication standards
Required Skills
- Proven MIG/TIG experience on steel, stainless, and aluminum
- Strong blueprint reading skills — must be able to work from multi‑view drawings
- Ability to build assemblies from scratch without supervision
- Ability to determine weld requirements when prints have no weld symbols
- Ability to identify and correct fit‑up issues
- Ability to manage heat and distortion
- Ability to hold tolerances
- Ability to work independently in a fast‑paced job‑shop environment
- Ability to safely operate a forklift to move material and welded assemblies
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and move material safely
Nice to Have (Not Required)
- Press brake or shear experience
- Layout and fabrication experience
- Experience with complex assemblies or custom fabrication
Pay
$25–$28/hr Pay is based strictly on proven welding and fabrication ability across steel, stainless, and aluminum, plus blueprint and assembly skills. Rates above $28/hr are reserved for welders who demonstrate exceptional speed, accuracy, and job‑shop capability.
