Full Job Description

Position Summary

Alki Marine Lumber is looking for a dependable, organized, and hands-on Controller to manage our daily accounting operations and help maintain accurate financial and inventory records. We are a growing lumber and building materials company generating approximately $22 million in annual revenue.

This position reports to the CFO and works closely with the President, Sales Manager, Shipping Manager, and other team members.

We are looking for someone who is comfortable handling day-to-day accounting responsibilities, reviewing financial information, resolving discrepancies, and improving processes.

Responsibilities

Accounting Operations

Manage day-to-day accounting activities and maintain accurate financial records.
Oversee accounts payable and accounts receivable.
Prepare monthly journal entries and assist with month-end closing.
Prepare and review weekly vendor payments.
Maintain fixed-asset and depreciation schedules.
Research and resolve accounting discrepancies.
Manage past-due customer accounts and collection activities.
Review customer credit applications, accounts, and credit limits.
Assist the CFO with monthly financial statements, variance analysis, and other reporting.

Inventory Management

Work with the President and Sales Manager to help maintain appropriate inventory levels.
Review inventory movement and identify slow-moving or obsolete products.
Process and review inventory adjustments resulting from physical counts or errors.
Help coordinate quarterly physical inventory counts.
Review freight, shrinkage, damage, and inventory write-offs for accuracy.
Monitor inventory valuation and ensure consistent accounting treatment.
Review inventory turnover and aging reports.

Planning and Collaboration

Assist with reviewing service agreements and customer contracts.
Work with management on sales projections and operational budgets.
Assist with budgets for equipment, yard repairs, and facility improvements.
Help develop and maintain company policies and procedures.
Coordinate with managers on other operational and accounting needs.

Systems and Data Management

Keep financial and inventory information in the ERP system accurate and organized.
Identify practical system improvements that could save time or improve accuracy.
Prepare and maintain reports from the ERP system.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
At least 3 years of progressive accounting experience, including month-end closing and financial reporting.
Previous experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, Accounting Manager, Senior Accountant, or in a similar accounting role is preferred.
Working knowledge of GAAP, budgeting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
Familiarity with inventory accounting or inventory management is preferred.
Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience using ERP systems.
Strong attention to detail, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Experience in lumber, building materials, distribution, or a related industry is helpful but not required.
CPA is preferred.

Pay: $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 per year
