Position Overview
The Safety Superintendent serves as a senior field safety leader responsible for supporting the execution of DIG's Safety Management System across multiple projects and regions.
Reporting directly to the Corporate Safety Manager, the Safety Superintendent serves as the primary link between field operations and the Safety Department, providing leadership, mentorship, technical guidance, and operational support to project teams.
This position is responsible for overseeing project safety performance, mentoring Safety Coordinators, supporting incident management efforts, driving compliance initiatives, and promoting a proactive safety culture throughout the organization.
The ideal candidate is a strong field leader who can build relationships, influence operational decision-making, support workforce development, and partner effectively with project teams to integrate safety into daily operations.
Key Responsibilities
Safety Leadership & Operational Support
- Provide leadership and oversight for safety performance across assigned projects and geographic regions.
- Support implementation and execution of DIG's Safety Management System.
- Serve as the primary field representative for the Safety Department.
- Build strong working relationships with Superintendents, Foremen, Project Managers, and client representatives.
- Support project teams in integrating safety into planning, scheduling, and daily operations.
- Promote a proactive safety culture focused on hazard recognition, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Support company safety initiatives, programs, and department objectives.
- Provide field feedback and recommendations to support the continued improvement of DIG's Safety Management System.
Safety Coordinator Leadership & Development
- Supervise, mentor, and support Safety Coordinator I and Safety Coordinator II personnel.
- Conduct regular coaching, development discussions, and performance feedback sessions.
- Assist with onboarding and training of new Safety Department personnel.
- Support professional development and career progression of Safety Coordinators.
- Promote consistency in inspections, observations, documentation, reporting, and communication across the Safety Team.
- Assist in establishing accountability and performance expectations for assigned staff.
- Conduct field coaching and practical development activities to improve safety knowledge and effectiveness.
Project Safety Oversight
- Conduct regular site audits, inspections, and field assessments across active projects.
- Support project startup and mobilization efforts to ensure safety requirements are established prior to work beginning.
- Participate in pre-construction meetings, planning meetings, project kickoff meetings, and client coordination meetings as needed.
- Review and provide feedback on Activity Hazard Analyses, Pre-Task Plans, excavation permits, confined space permits, and other project-specific safety documentation.
- Support field teams in identifying hazards and developing practical controls that align with project conditions.
- Verify compliance with company policies, client requirements, and applicable regulatory standards.
- Monitor implementation of corrective actions and follow-up activities.
- Support subcontractor safety oversight and compliance efforts.
Incident Management & Investigations
- Lead and support incident investigations involving injuries, property damage, vehicle incidents, utility strikes, near misses, and environmental events.
- Conduct root cause analyses and develop corrective action recommendations.
- Assist with incident documentation and reporting requirements.
- Support injury management, return-to-work coordination, and corrective action follow-up in coordination with Human Resources and company leadership.
- Track trends and provide recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Assist project teams with lessons learned and continuous improvement initiatives.
Regulatory & Client Compliance
- Maintain working knowledge of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Department of Transportation (DOT), state, local, and client-specific safety requirements.
- Serve as a company representative during OSHA inspections, client audits, and third-party safety reviews.
- Support compliance audits and program assessments.
- Assist with the development and implementation of corrective actions resulting from audits and inspections.
- Ensure consistency in compliance expectations across multiple projects.
- Support client-specific safety programs, permitting requirements, and project compliance obligations.
Training & Workforce Development
- Deliver and support safety training programs for employees and supervisors.
- Mentor Safety Coordinators through field coaching, practical application, and professional development.
- Conduct field verification of employee competency and understanding of safe work practices.
- Support training initiatives involving:
- Excavation and Trenching
- Confined Space Entry
- Rigging and Signaling
- Fall Protection
- Heavy Equipment Operations
- Utility Construction Hazards
- Assist in identifying training gaps and workforce development opportunities.
- Promote employee engagement and participation in safety initiatives.
Reporting, Audits & Continuous Improvement
- Review observations, inspections, incidents, utility strikes, vehicle incidents, and training compliance trends to identify opportunities for improvement.
- Support department reporting efforts through timely submission of observations, inspections, investigations, and corrective action documentation.
- Conduct periodic audits of projects, crews, and safety processes to verify compliance and consistency.
- Provide field feedback to support policy improvements, training initiatives, and department development efforts.
- Support implementation of new safety initiatives, procedures, and operational improvements.
Qualifications
Required
- Minimum of 7 years of progressive construction safety experience.
- Minimum of 2 years of leadership, supervisory, or mentoring experience.
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 30-Hour Construction Certification.
- Strong knowledge of construction safety regulations and industry best practices.
- Experience conducting incident investigations and root cause analyses.
- Experience leading audits, inspections, and compliance reviews.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel between multiple project locations.
Preferred
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Construction Management, Environmental Health and Safety, or related field.
- Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 500 Construction Outreach Trainer Certification.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
- Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST).
- Competent Person qualifications in:

- Confined Space Entry
- Rigging and Signaling
- Utility construction, telecommunications, power, underground utility, or data center construction experience.

Compensation & Benefits
DIG offers a competitive compensation package that includes:
- Salary range of $90,000-$105,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and certifications
