POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
Assistant Community School Director
Center for Supportive Schools (CSS) is a fast-paced, collegial, and team-oriented organization wholly committed to helping schools become places where students want to be. CSS is driven by the vision that one day, all students will thrive in schools that graduate them prepared for the rigors of college and lives filled with meaningful work, active citizenship, and personal fulfillment.
Our work directly addresses student disengagement, a root cause of diminished academic performance, students dropping out of school, and other high-risk student behaviors. Founded in 1979, we are a national organization currently impacting 65,000 students annually and committed to supporting every K-12 school in the country.
We know that we can only be truly mission-oriented by first building a safe, supportive, engaging, and inspiring internal culture. Thus, we focus on creating the conditions for staff to bring the full weight of their brilliance, skills, and past experiences, and to thrive personally. We work to ensure that all staff feel accepted, valued, affirmed, connected, safe to grow, and encouraged to advocate for progress.

About Community Schools
Community Schools offer a holistic approach toward improving academic performance driven by strong, collaborative partnerships among principals, parents, teachers, and many other organizations. In Community Schools, parents are active partners in their children’s education. Each student is connected to a mentor, club, academic services and/or social services. The school climate is joyful and positive. Extended school days or weekend classes are commonplace. An integral part of this approach is the blending of school- and community-based services into the school day, including health, mental health, counseling, and academic enrichment.
Community Schools across New York City (NYC) and Jersey City (JC) are instrumental in helping schools catch up or leap ahead, and in putting all of our students on the path to four-year colleges and long-term careers. Our delivery of the Community Schools strategy enables CSS to help students achieve success through:
· Meaningful family involvement in decision making around student needs
· Meaningful interactions with community-based services and programs
· Robust data monitoring and attendance taking practices
The Role
The Assistant Community School Director (ASCD) will support the implementation and continuous improvement of the Community School strategy at Flushing High School. The ACSD will work alongside the Community School Director to strengthen coordinated systems that connect students and families to expanded learning, integrated supports, college and career pathways, youth leadership, and high-quality community partnerships.
This role is designed for a developing school-based leader who can move beyond program coordination into implementation leadership: building relationships, strengthening systems, using data to improve practice, and ensuring that student-facing opportunities are coherent, accessible, and aligned to schoolwide priorities.
Key Job Responsibilities
Collaborative Leadership & Practice
· Partner with the Community School Director to translate schoolwide priorities into aligned implementation plans, student-facing opportunities, and partner-supported initiatives.
· Contribute to shared planning structures, including Community School Team meetings, MTSS-related conversations, CSS team check-ins, and other school-based planning spaces as assigned.
· Strengthen communication routines that help school staff, partners, and CSS team members understand program goals, student targets, timelines, and progress.
· Use student voice, staff feedback, and implementation data to support continuous improvement and strengthen the quality of Community School programming.
Expanded Learning Time & Opportunities
· Support a coherent expanded learning strategy that connects the Community Center, afterschool activities, clubs, enrichment opportunities, and student engagement events to schoolwide goals.
· Ensure student engagement spaces are welcoming, structured, purposeful, and connected to belonging, leadership, attendance, and youth development.
· Use student interest, participation trends, and school priorities to refine enrichment opportunities and reduce barriers to student access.
· Support the visibility and communication of expanded learning opportunities so students, staff, and families understand what is available and how to participate.
Integrated Student Supports, Attendance & Belonging
· Support schoolwide systems that connect students to mentoring, engagement opportunities, academic enrichment, wellness/resource supports, and positive recognition.
· Use attendance, participation, and engagement data to help identify priority student groups, emerging needs, and opportunities for intervention or support.
· Collaborate with counselors, teachers, deans, parent coordinator, partners, and school leadership to strengthen referral, follow-up, and documentation practices.
· Help ensure student support efforts are proactive, relationship-centered, and aligned to the school’s MTSS and Community School priorities.
College, Career & Postsecondary Readiness
· Serve as the Community School implementation lead for college, career, and postsecondary readiness programming in partnership with the Community School Director, school counseling/college office staff, and external partners.
· Strengthen student access to college, trade, career exploration, SAT/ACT support, life skills, internships/work-based learning, and postsecondary exposure opportunities.
· Support a coherent CCR pathway that is visible to students and families and responsive to the needs of 11th and 12th grade students, while also building earlier awareness for younger students.
· Coordinate partner-supported CCR opportunities so implementation is aligned, student-centered, and connected to the school’s long-term student success goals.
Family & Community Engagement
· Support family-facing engagement connected to expanded learning, college/career readiness, student support, resource access, and school community events.
· Strengthen relationships with parents/caregivers and community partners so families experience Community Schools as accessible, responsive, and connected to student success.
· Contribute to needs and asset assessment processes that help ensure programming is inclusive, culturally responsive, and aligned to student and family priorities.
· Support communication and engagement strategies that make Community School opportunities clear, consistent, and easier for families to access.
Partnership Implementation & Continuous Improvement
· Serve as an implementation liaison for assigned partners and programs, ensuring partner work is connected to school goals, student needs, and clear measures of success.
· Support partner onboarding, scheduling, communication, reflection, and problem-solving so services are coordinated and sustainable.
· Maintain implementation systems that make progress visible, including calendars, participation data, reflection notes, partner updates, and project management tools.
· Flag barriers early, elevate support needs to the Community School Director, and help adjust implementation based on evidence, feedback, and school context.
