This is a professional position that requires the exercise of independent judgment in the execution of assigned duties. The individual in this position is responsible for the management and coordination of the County’s Volunteer Fire Departments and Fire Services Program.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Prepare the County’s annual fire protection services budget for presentation to the County Manager.
Maintain records and documentation for each municipal and volunteer fire department for items such as equipment, personnel, drivers list for County vehicle insurance, and call summaries. Assist departments with ISO rating information and surveys by ISO. Maintain contracts for service between municipalities, volunteer fire departments and Board of County Commissioners. Make presentations (public speaking) to groups, clubs, churches, city and county commissioners regarding fire service program. Make recommendations and reports to County Manager regarding Municipal and Volunteer Fire Departments. Manage Fire Service program in accordance with 5-year plan. Update and revise 5-year plan annually in conjunction with FSAB - Fire Safety Advisory Board. Assist with the coordination and response of Emergency Services (EMS/Fire) in the event of a natural or manmade disaster. Performs a variety of life and property protection work through the suppression and prevention of fires and in response to emergency aid calls on a shift. At the scene of a fire, work is performed under hazardous conditions involving smoke, heat, and cramped surroundings, generally requiring strenuous physical exertion. At the scene of a medical emergency or accident, firefighters attend to the public under stressful conditions involving trauma, suffering, and personal tragedies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to gather, analyze, and complete statistical data reports. Ability to function independently with minimal supervision under general directions from management and under general policy guidelines. Ability to operate a computer system to prepare documents and manage information databases(s), spreadsheets. Ability to work varying and odd hours. Ability to train, prepare, coordinate, and present courses to volunteer fire departments. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with multiple agencies and multiple personnel involved in Fire Service system.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
Minimum of four (4) years of progressively responsible administrative experience.
Must be a certified firefighter.
Must possess NIMS certification.
Bachelor’s degree in Fire Administration or a related field preferred.
Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered in lieu of the stated requirements.
