JOB TITLE: Highway Maintainer
WAGE: $29.72 / hour
FLSA: Non-Exempt

SCHEDULE: 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday
After hours call out possible due to emergency or weather related conditions.
Overtime may be required to fulfill these commitments.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: The employee reports directly to the Maintenance Superintendent but may be assigned on a daily basis to a Foreman or Lead Worker.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (May not include all duties performed)
Perform hand labor tasks including but not limited to hand patching, traffic control (flagging) and sign installation, brush cutting, repairing guardrail, bridge deck cleaning, cleaning buildings and grounds, cleaning culverts, hand mowing, and cleaning and washing equipment.
Drive and maintain medium duty, tandem and/or single axle trucks for hauling materials and equipment used in maintaining the County Highway System.
Operate and maintain light to heavy duty construction and maintenance equipment used by the County Highway Department.
During the winter months, the employee will be assigned a snow route. With a snow route assigned, the employee will be required to operate a highway maintenance truck equipped with a snow plow. The employee may be required to spend extended hours operating snow removal equipment during winter weather conditions.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to read and write English.
Ability to understand and follow verbal and written directions/instructions given in English.
Ability to work in a coordinated manner with other employees to accomplish the tasks assigned.
Possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement. A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with air brake and combination vehicle endorsements, preferred.
Experience in the operation of a tandem axle or single dump truck.
Capable of operating light to heavy duty construction and road maintenance equipment.
Familiar with preventative maintenance procedures of tandem axle trucks, light trucks and light to heavy duty construction and maintenance equipment. (Maintenance and repair experience on construction equipment desirable but not required.)
Ability to pass the testing for and maintain “IDOT Certified Flagger” certification. When acting as a flagman on maintenance projects, basic procedures must be followed to communicate effectively with the motorists who pass through the work site.
Ability to pass the testing for and maintain “Fork Lift Operator” certification.
ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Perform any duties as may be assigned by the Maintenance Superintendent, Foreman or Lead Worker.
Operate the County's highway maintenance trucks and light duty equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
Services assigned truck and equipment on a daily basis to keep it operational; reports any problems with assigned equipment to the immediate supervisor.
Notify the proper authorities and department supervisors when emergency situations develop.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed indoors, as well as outdoors during construction and maintenance activities for extended periods of time under a wide variety of weather conditions, in normal or emergency situations.
Work may expose employee to inclement weather, poisonous plants, fumes and dust.
Work requires the use of safety clothing and equipment, compliance with safety rules, procedures and precautions applicable to the work.
Work may be performed in and along-side moving traffic.
Work may involve dealing with dissatisfied residents or the traveling public.
PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES / DEMANDS:
Work requires sufficient physical strength, agility, endurance, dexterity and hand-eye-foot coordination to perform all essential duties including but not limited to:
Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions, day or night, in normal and emergency situations.
Ability to climb, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop and twist and perform duties, using appropriate tools and equipment within safety standards; standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
Ability to walk over uneven or sloping ground.
Ability to drive vehicles in a safe and conscientious manner.
Ability to recognize or comprehend when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong. It does not involve solving the problem, only the recognition there is a problem.
Ability to lift/lower, carry and push/pull various amounts of force within the “heavy work” as defined by the US Department of Labor; team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 pounds.
Ability to perform manual labor, including but not limited to the use of shovels, rakes, lutes, chain saws, compaction equipment, etc.
