Lead Mechanical Engineer

$100,000 – $115,000 | Full-time | On-site

Position Overview

We are seeking a Lead Mechanical Engineer to provide technical leadership in the design, development, and continuous improvement of fractional horsepower gearmotors. This role serves as the primary engineering authority within the organization and is responsible for establishing design standards, approving engineering outputs, and ensuring alignment between engineering, production, and customer requirements.

This position requires close, ongoing collaboration with Sales, Production, and Manufacturing to ensure that product designs are practical, manufacturable, and aligned with customer needs. The Lead Mechanical Engineer will play a central role in connecting customer requirements with internal capabilities, ensuring efficient execution from concept through production.

Key Responsibilities

- Lead the design and development of gearmotor components and assemblies, including housing, shafts, gearing interfaces, and related mechanical systems.

- Create, review, and approve engineering drawings, 3D models, and bills of materials, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and manufacturability.

- Establish and maintain engineering standards, design practices, and documentation protocols across product lines.

- Collaborate closely with Sales to evaluate customer requirements, support quoting activities, new product development, and develop practical, cost-effective design solutions.

- Work directly with Production and Manufacturing daily to troubleshoot design issues, improve manufacturability, and ensure smooth product implementation on the shop floor.

- Serve as the primary technical resource across departments, providing guidance on product performance, feasibility, and design tradeoffs.

- Lead root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for product failures, quality concerns, and process inefficiencies.

- Support customization of standardized product families while maintaining consistency, quality, and cost control.

Qualifications

- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline.

- 5–10 years of mechanical design experience within a manufacturing environment.

- Demonstrated experience working cross-functionally with Sales, Production, and Manufacturing teams.

- Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks or equivalent) with experience developing detailed parts and assembly drawings.

- Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).

- Experience supporting both standard product lines and customer-specific modifications.

- Experience with gearing and gear manufacturing is strongly preferred.

Expectations

- Provide technical leadership and ownership of all mechanical design activities within the organization.

- Act as the final authority on design decisions, balancing performance, manufacturability, cost, and customer requirements.

- Maintain consistent, proactive collaboration with Sales, Production, and Manufacturing to ensure alignment and effective execution.

- Deliver accurate, complete, and timely engineering documentation to support production schedules and customer commitments.

- Proactively identify opportunities for product and process improvement, driving initiatives that enhance quality, reliability, and efficiency.

- Communicate clearly and effectively across all functions, ensuring technical decisions are well understood and aligned with business objectives.

Organizational Context

- Reports directly to the President

- Works in conjunction with a Manufacturing Engineer, VP of Sales, and VP of Manufacturing Operations

- Serves as the primary engineering authority in a small, collaborative team environment

- No direct reports; leadership is exercised through technical expertise and cross-functional influence

Position Scope

This role operates in a highly collaborative environment with frequent interaction across Sales, Production, and Manufacturing. At the same time, the position requires a high degree of individual ownership and autonomy, as the Lead Mechanical Engineer is responsible for driving design decisions, establishing standards, and independently executing key engineering activities. Success in this role requires the ability to balance collaboration with independent judgment and accountability.

Pay: $100,000.00 - $115,000.00 per year
