Salary: Grant Funded Position (3 years) - Commensurate with Experience

About the Black Family Land Trust, Inc.

The Black Family Land Trust, Inc. (BFLT) is one of the only regional conservation land trusts in the United States dedicated to preserving Black- and historically underserved-owned land assets. BFLT’s mission is to support landowners in protecting, retaining, and responsibly managing their land for the benefit of current and future generations. Through education, advocacy, and technical assistance, BFLT helps ensure that land remains a resource for wealth building, cultural heritage, environmental stewardship, and community resilience.

Position Overview

BFLT is seeking a skilled and community-focused Forester to provide technical forestry services and conservation support to African American and other historically underserved landowners in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The Forester will work closely with state Departments of Forestry, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), and other conservation partners to implement sustainable forest management practices, promote climate-smart forestry, and help landowners navigate federal and state forestry assistance programs.

Key Responsibilities

· Conduct forest management assessments and prepare personalized forest stewardship plans.

· Assist landowners in applying for forestry cost-share and technical assistance programs, including USDA NRCS initiatives such as EQIP and CSP.

· Provide education and outreach on sustainable forestry, agroforestry, timber management, and climate-resilient practices.

· Collaborate with the Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina Departments of Forestry, USDA NRCS, and other partners to coordinate services.

· Lead and support landowner workshops, field days, and virtual trainings.

· Promote forest health, habitat conservation, carbon sequestration, and responsible land stewardship.

· Track landowner engagement, document service delivery, and support program reporting.

· Represent BFLT in local, state, and regional forestry and conservation networks.

Qualifications

· Bachelor’s degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or a related field.

· Registered or Licensed Forester (or eligible for registration in VA, NC, and SC within 6 months).

· At least 3 years of forestry, conservation, or land management experience.

· Knowledge of silviculture, agroforestry, climate-smart forestry, and carbon markets preferred.

· Familiarity with USDA NRCS programs and state-level forestry initiatives.

· Strong communication and outreach skills, with the ability to work effectively with African American and rural landowners.

· Ability to work independently, travel frequently throughout VA, NC, and SC, and engage with diverse stakeholders.

· Proficiency in forestry tools and GIS mapping software is a plus.

Preferred Skills

· Cultural competence and sensitivity to issues facing Black and historically underserved landowners.

· Experience with conservation easements, estate planning, or land retention strategies.

· Understanding of climate-smart forestry, agroforestry, and carbon market principles.

· Bilingual abilities (especially Spanish) are a plus but not required.
