Job summary:

A Place at the Table (Table) is a non-profit pay-what-you-can café located in downtown Raleigh. Our mission is to provide community and good food for all regardless of means. We have a welcoming and inviting space that provides an opportunity for all people to experience conversation and community while enjoying an excellent, fresh, and healthy meal.

The General Manager is a vital role and key tone setter in the day to day cafe operations. This role requires presence during peak volume times, including weekends. Responsibilities include overseeing management and hourly staff, creating connections and ensuring smooth customer experiences, maintaining food quality and service standards and upholding all company policies and procedures. The general manager will also be responsible for working with the Director of Operations to understand, manage and guide financials to meet annual budgets.

This is a role that requires a deep understanding and commitment to our mission. The right candidate will bring both operational strength and a heart for the community, recognizing that every task—from managing a shift to resolving a customer concern—helps us build a more welcoming and inclusive place for all.

Key Responsibilities

Daily Operations

Daily shift running: Compiling and delivering line up notes
POS awareness and preparedness
Ability to support all positions as needed
Follow best practices for cash handling procedures
Support the team in managing the flow of guests through the space and help coach volunteers through tasks
Aid in maintaining a level of kindness, dignity and respect for all people in our space.
Work and guide all staff to create a welcoming, loving environment to everyone that walks in. Ensure dignity and respect as well as safety and wellbeing
Guide the team to utilize tools that help to streamline and optimize catering opportunities, capturing new clients and creating positive experiences for guests and staff alike.
Collaborate with community engagement team to ensure seamless integration of volunteers into daily operations
Aid the marketing team in staying up to date on social media including responding to messages and creating, as needed, on the spot posts

Team Management

Hold all team members to standards outlined in the Table employee handbook.
Hire, train, coach and supervise the entire management team, including chef and community manager.
Create a schedule that optimizes the roles of individual team members and the success of the operation, including strategically monitoring and approving PTO and overseeing leaves of absence.
Work with the management team to ensure shifts are staffed, both with team members and volunteers.
Train employees and volunteers on proper customer service practices.
Conduct reviews, at 90 days from start of employment and annually within 30 days of anniversary date.

Oversee and guide cafe finances

Maintain successful business practices including but not limited to keeping the P&L statement within budget
Keep necessary items in stock, ordering in a timely fashion to ensure seamless operations.
Work with management team to effectively staff and manage labor to what is needed for cafe operations

Facilities & Compliance

Oversee and manage building maintenance, monitor compliance with the city for various inspections (health, fire, exhaust cleaning, sprinkler, backflow).
Accurately manage inventory using best practices and up to date pars for ordering efficiently.

Additional Qualifications & Skills:

2+ years of experience managing food service operations
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to work on your feet for extended periods of time.
Safe food handling certification
Proficient in Excel, point of sale systems, internet and email applications
Experience working in nonprofit either working or volunteering preferred
A true understanding that this role is about more than running a restaurant—it’s about showing up for our community and creating a space where everyone feels seen, valued, and welcomed.
