GENERAL SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer and Communications Officer, the Senior Accountant is responsible for day-to-day finance and accounting operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial systems, and related finance administration. This role will work closely with the bookkeeping/accounting vendor to provide oversight and guidance for the outsourced accounting functions. The Senior Accountant ensures timely reconciliation and reporting of financial statements, prepares financial analyses for leadership and other stakeholders, and maintains accurate fiscal records. This is a hybrid role, with three days in the office.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Ensure day-to-day transactions such as accounts payable, cash receipts, accounts receivable, credit card transactions, and payroll are recorded properly. Run various reports for monthly closing.
Ensure timely and accurate month-end journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations, ensuring accounting schedules are updated and accurate.
Prepare invoices for payment; review for accuracy and ensure proper approvals have been provided.
Ensure proper revenue and expense recognition.
Monitor cash and investment balances, manage cash flow forecasting and financial models.
Prepare payroll documentation and oversee payroll entry with payroll service; track employee fringe benefits.
Serve as the primary point of contact for payroll, accounting, expense management, and accounting policy questions; lead initiatives to educate staff about various benefit and accounting topics, or other special projects.
Administer expense management software; support staff using the platform.
Assist the Chief Administrative and Communications Officer and budget managers with budget development, monitoring, and monthly financial reporting.
Perform fiscal year-end close activities and support external audit requirements.
Financial statement review and preparation; present to Executive Team and Executive Committee as requested.
Manage all commercial insurance policies annually, including oversight of renewal or securing new policies.
Communicate regularly with the Chief Administrative and Communications Officer regarding accounting operations, reporting needs, and process improvements;
Assist with the development and implementation of accounting policies and procedures; ensure adherence to internal controls requirements.
Ensure finance and accounting operations comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and applicable laws and regulations.
Identify and implement opportunities to streamline finance and accounting operations through technology and improved processes.
Manage select finance administration activities, such as compliance filings, annual reporting, or other assigned requirements.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree required; degree in finance, accounting, or a related field preferred.
Master's degree and/or CPA certification preferred.
Five or more years of financial management and accounting experience preferred; nonprofit, association, public-sector, or professional-services experience is a plus.
Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, especially Excel.
Sound knowledge of accounting principles, standards, and regulations.
Hands-on experience with financial management software, expense management software, and financial forecasting software preferred.
Experience supporting or overseeing the annual audit process preferred.
Strong data management and analytical skills.
Strong time management, organization, accuracy, and attention to detail.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, including the ability to explain financial information in clear language
