Overview
Arts Together is seeking warm, creative, and dependable Substitute Preschool Teachers to support our arts-integrated preschool program as needed throughout the academic year. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with young children, values creativity and play, and is comfortable stepping into a collaborative classroom environment.
For more than 40 years, Arts Together has helped children build confidence, curiosity, and a lifelong love of learning through the arts. Our preschool is a warm, welcoming community where children learn through movement, music, visual art, drama, nature play, exploration, and meaningful relationships.
Position Summary
Schedule: Substitute shifts are offered on an as-needed basis during the academic year, Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM – 1:00 PM. Availability may vary based on program needs.
The Substitute Preschool Teacher supports the care, supervision, and engagement of preschool students in collaboration with Lead Teachers and Teaching Artists. Substitutes help maintain classroom routines, support smooth transitions, participate in arts-integrated classes, and create a nurturing environment where children feel safe, included, and ready to learn.
Arts Together’s preschool includes experiences in art, dance, drama, music, nature play, and Learning Lab activities. Substitute Teachers may assist with guided free play, circle time, classroom setup, materials organization, outdoor play, transitions across learning spaces, and support for Teaching Artists throughout the day.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide attentive visual and auditory supervision of children indoors and outdoors at all times.
- Support Lead Teachers and Teaching Artists with daily classroom routines, transitions, and activities.
- Help create and maintain a nurturing, organized, and inclusive classroom environment.
- Engage with children in a positive, respectful, and developmentally appropriate manner.
- Assist with guided free play, morning circle, snack routines, outdoor play, and arts-integrated classes.
- Support children’s social and emotional development by encouraging self-regulation, cooperation, and a sense of belonging.
- Help children move safely and calmly between Arts Together’s learning spaces.
- Assist with classroom materials, supply organization, cleanup, and preparation as needed.
- Communicate respectfully and professionally with children, families, teachers, and staff.
- Follow classroom expectations, safety procedures, and program guidance provided by the teaching team.
Qualifications
- Experience working with young children in a classroom, camp, childcare, arts education, or similar setting preferred.
- Warm, compassionate, positive, and nurturing approach to children.
- Creative, energetic, flexible, and comfortable participating in art, music, movement, drama, and play-based learning.
- Strong communication skills with children, families, teachers, and colleagues.
- Ability to follow established classroom routines and take direction from Lead Teachers and program staff.
- Dependable, professional, and able to arrive prepared for scheduled shifts.
- Comfortable using email, phone, and basic digital communication tools.
- Understanding of the social, emotional, physical, and creative needs of young children.
- Available for substitute shifts Monday through Friday during preschool program hours.
- Conscious Discipline training is a plus.
- Employment is contingent on a criminal background check.

Pay
$17–$19/hour, commensurate with experience.
