Phlebotomist

Wake Internal Medicine Consultants Job Description

General Duties:

The Phlebotomist assumes the responsibility of performing accurate venipuncture and capillary blood collections as well as related procedures under the philosophy, policies and procedures established by the practice and department.

Reports to: Laboratory Manager or designated leader

Education, Training and Experience:

High School graduate
Medical Assistant or phlebotomy certification preferred
Experience in a hospital setting preferred
One year phlebotomy experience preferred
Excellent customer service skills
Math, Verbal and written skills at the high school level
Excellent computer skills

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Demonstrates competence in all procedures required by a phlebotomist in accordance with practice policies.
Knows various needles, anticoagulants, special handling and preparation of tests that are to be performed.
Assists in orientation of new staff members as necessary.
Recognizes how the phlebotomist’s position and duties relate to the overall function of the laboratory and the practice in view of patient care.
Assists in training new employees or students in phlebotomy.
Demonstrates competence in drawing and processing pediatric specimens.
Demonstrates competence in drawing and processing adult specimens.
Demonstrates competence in drawing and processing geriatric patient specimens.
Ability to communicate with staff and patients to ensure quality patient care.
Ability to maintain and support a professional service-oriented relationship with patients.
Respecting and maintaining patient confidentiality.
Maintain a positive work environment.

Job Responsibilities:

Understand how to use a computer and be able to learn the system.
Follow laboratory procedures for specimen collection and handling.
Correctly identify patients and properly label specimens.
Verify test requisitions by comparing information with LIS log and bringing discrepancies to the attention of the lab personnel.
Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, nurse or lab personnel; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for clarification; notifying supervisor of unresolved orders.
Correctly identify and utilize proper tubes, containers, transport media, and storage temperature for each test type.
Correctly identify proper priority for the collection process.
Proper placement of samples after collection.
Follow appropriate guidelines for missed draws, recollects, or difficult sticks.
Utilize proper resources to answer inquiries for test information and basic customer related issues.
Understand and follow all safety, infection control and the OSHA blood-borne pathogen guidelines.
Understand and follow all HIPAA privacy guidelines.
Demonstrate efficiency by performing procedures in a timely manner and determining priority.
Utilize appropriate supplies with minimal waste.
Utilize unstructured time constructively.
Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; participating in professional organizations.
Supports teamwork approach. Avoids criticism of others. Strives to be an effective and productive member of the institution.
While infrequent, coverage at our North Raleigh office may be required during times when primary staff member is unavailable

Typical Physical Demands:

Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
Remains standing for most of the shift.
Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Requires visual acuity and normal color perception.

Typical Working Conditions:

Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazard body fluids and hazardous chemicals.
Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction and stress.
Hazardous working conditions in which the individual is exposed to definite risk of bodily injury through contact with chemicals and/or body fluids.
