Full job description

Spooner’s Woodworks is a longtime San Diego based Manufacturing and Millwork Contractor. We are currently seeking an Estimator with 3+ years of experience in millwork estimating and business development.

This position requires technical experience in carpentry, parts and assemblies, and various cabinet & millwork products. Familiarity with public works is a plus. Ability to gather and provide accurate pricing, plus subcontracted scope if applicable.

The ideal candidate must be proactive, detail oriented, analytical, organized, an innovative team player and able to meet established deadlines. Google Docs, Excel, and Microvellum scheduling software experience are a plus.

Scope of Position:

The basic function of the Estimator is to meet the established bidding & sales goals and growth objectives of the company and to plan and execute the necessary bidding activities to support and promote sales.
Critical functions include:
Estimating Per Plan & Specification of Projects, Project Cost Analysis, Client Relationship Development and Accurate Budget Preparation
Support Company Goals & Objectives

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. The use of analytical and observational skills which demonstrate an ability to organize, budget, forecast and control sales and marketing programs.

2. Must be able to read and interpret millwork from architectural blueprints and specifications.

3. Excellent knowledge of the Company’s industry and trends impacting its business.

4. Be able to comprehend and perform business math calculations necessary to accurately prepare job estimates and quotes, calculate gross profit margins and related costs.

5. Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities and Duties:

Review bid documents and submit RFQs/RFIs as necessary
Answer phones when needed /handle incoming sales calls
Answer customer/client questions regarding design
Review and maintain profit strategies with management
Ensure proper overhead, labor rates and burdens are being applied
Write proposals and Attachments using appropriate options and verbiage
Comfortably speak with potential customers about our capabilities and convey our industry expertise to solve their design concerns
Site visits and meetings with both potential clients and current customers
Ability to quantify accurate takeoffs with back up and subcontractor and supplier quotes based on plans both print and on computer
Facilitate project handoff meetings and project details with Engineering Department/Project Management (Create background information system utilized for contract negotiations) (Quotes, Bid Documents, Procedural documents based on provided Estimating Procedures)
Assist customers with most efficient layouts and/or designs that are most efficient for the desired outcome
Create bids using historical data and company defined best practices
Estimate projects from start to finish including bid entry and proposal writing
Request quotes from multiple suppliers and subcontractors for laminates, hardware, raw materials, stone, install, metal, etc.
Assist with prequals and proposals and submit for review when required
Prepare project analysis spreadsheets as required.
Freehand preliminary drawing and details for bidding purposes.

Physical Requirements:

Employees must be able to Stand, Walk, Sit, Talk/Hear, Use hands to finger, handle or feel, climb or balance, Stoop, Kneel, Crouch or crawl, Reach with hands and arms, taste or smell. Must has vision capabilities for using computer, viewing and comprehending drawings. Must be able to lift up to 25 Pounds. In addition to:
