General Statement of Duties:
Under the general guidance of the senior Mechanic, the Apprentice Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all City vehicles and equipment operated by the Street Department, as well as equipment used to maintain water and sewer lines.
Essential Functions:

1. Performs basic preventative maintenance and repair of City street and storm drainage systems and the operation of equipment requiring highly skilled manipulation of controls and attachments in maneuvering for safe and efficient special purpose operations.
2. Maintains gas pumps.
3. Operate City vehicles and equipment.
4. Inventories, orders, and maintains records of parts and equipment.
5. Maintains records of all service performed on equipment.
6. Perform duties as assigned.
7. Operates tractors with specialized equipment.
8. Operates sewer jet and vacuum.
9. Makes daily inspection of assigned equipment.
10. Assists in the training of lower-level employees to increase their skills in the maintenance, construction and repair of streets and storm drainage facilities.
11. Performs preventative maintenance and reports major maintenance needs and mechanical problems.
12. Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
13. Periodic overtime work.
14. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
15. Interact tactfully and effectively with those encountered in the course of the work, including public officials, the general public, and hostile and irate citizens.
16. Ability to work steadily and quickly.
17. Understand and follow instructions, both oral and written.
18. Use sound independent judgment within established procedures and regulations.
19. Regular, reliable, predictable and punctual attendance is an essential function of the position.
20. Compliance with all City of Ravenna city-wide and departmental policies, work rules and procedures.
21. Performs other duties related to those of the position and/or resulting from the needs of the organization as required by Street Superintendent or designee.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Qualifications:
1. Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
2. Must possess and maintain a valid State of Ohio Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class “B” with air brake and tanker endorsement throughout the term of employment.
3. Prefer a minimum of three (3) years of experience in operating large complex construction equipment.
4. Must have considerable knowledge of and skill in the effective and safe operation of large complex departmental automotive equipment.
5. Must have considerable knowledge of the component parts of such equipment, the performance limits and the preventative maintenance necessary to keep equipment in satisfactory operation.
6. Must repair and perform preventative maintenance on all city Service vehicles.
7. Must have skill in welding.
8. Knowledge of small engine repair, electrical systems, and air systems.
9. Must have the ability to keep records such as time spent on a job and the materials used.
10. Must have the ability to work an irregular schedule and under adverse conditions and to respond to emergency and routing call–outs.
11. Must have the ability to lift and carry heavy loads.
12. Must have an appreciation of safety considerations and the need for quality work performance.
13. Ability to interact tactfully and effectively with those encountered in the course of the work, including public officials, the general public and hostile and irate citizens.
14. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with City employees and officials and the general public.
15. Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
16. Ability to work alone or with other personnel.
17. Ability to use sound independent judgment within established procedures and regulations.
18. Ability to work steadily and quickly.
19. Knowledge of basic geographic layout of the City.

· While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions.
· The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to below 30°F temperatures, wind, wet and/or humid conditions and vibration.

· The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock.
Hourly Wage: $28.76 - $42.93
Pay: $28.76 - $42.93 per hour
