Job Summary
We are seeking a dependable and patient-focused X-Ray Technologist / Medical Assistant to join our orthopedic practice. This position performs diagnostic radiographic examinations and assists physicians and physician assistants in providing high-quality orthopedic care.
The successful candidate will also provide clinical and clerical support as needed. All duties must be performed within the employee's training and scope of practice, including requirements established by the Pennsylvania Board of Medicine and other applicable Pennsylvania licensing and regulatory authorities.
X-Ray Technologist Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for radiographic examinations by confirming identity, reviewing the imaging order, explaining the procedure, and obtaining relevant medical information.
- Perform diagnostic X-rays according to provider orders, approved protocols, and applicable professional standards.
- Position patients accurately to obtain high-quality orthopedic images, including extremity, joint, spine, and other musculoskeletal studies.
- Use radiation-safety practices, including appropriate shielding, collimation, exposure selection, and pregnancy-screening procedures.
- Evaluate images for technical quality and repeat images only when clinically or technically necessary.
- Operate imaging equipment safely and report equipment malfunctions promptly.
- Maintain complete imaging records, including patient information, examination details, and image labeling.
- Upload and route images through the practice's PACS and EHR systems for provider review.
- Import or assist with outside imaging and ensure that studies are available to the treating provider.
- Follow infection-control procedures and clean imaging equipment and patient-contact surfaces between examinations.
- Maintain the X-ray area, including supplies, lead protection equipment, and required quality-control documentation.
- Assist with patient transfers and positioning, including patients with limited mobility, acute injuries, casts, braces, or postoperative restrictions.
- Comply with all applicable regulations, practice policies, radiation-safety requirements, and quality-assurance procedures.
Orthopedic Medical Assistant Responsibilities
- Greet patients in the waiting room and escort them to the appropriate examination or treatment room.
- Document and review each patient's medical history, surgical history, current medications, and allergies.
- Obtain and document vital signs accurately in the EHR.
- Prepare examination rooms and ensure that instruments, supplies, and equipment are available.
- Assist physicians and physician assistants with patient examinations and treatments.
- Assist with ultrasound-guided injections and diagnostic procedures, including equipment setup and patient positioning.
- Prepare injections according to provider instructions, safety standards, and scope-of-practice requirements.
- Remove or apply casts as instructed by a physician or physician assistant and within the employee's demonstrated competency.
- Assist with minor procedures, including incision and drainage, joint aspiration, dressing changes, and suture or staple removal.
- Fit patients with braces and other durable medical equipment, explain proper use and care, and complete required DME documentation.
- Provide provider-directed patient education regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, activity restrictions, braces, casts, and follow-up care.
- Serve as a liaison between patients and providers to support timely communication and continuity of care.
- Collect and prepare specimens, complete required documentation, and contact the courier for laboratory delivery.
- Address triage messages, task lists, and other patient-care requests promptly and route clinical questions to licensed personnel when appropriate.
- Review incoming patient documents with the physician or physician assistant as necessary.
- Maintain patient flow and communicate delays or concerns to the Practice Administrator.
Documentation and Clerical Responsibilities
- Assist clinical staff with documentation, including DME forms, school excuses, work restrictions, and EHR entries.
- Process patient-requested paperwork, including short-term disability forms, FMLA documents, work-capability forms, and insurance-related requests.
- Scan documents into the EHR and route them to the appropriate provider or department.
- Route incoming faxes and distribute messages to the appropriate clinician or staff member.
- Answer telephone calls promptly and direct or triage calls to the appropriate personnel.
- Schedule appointments, including consultations, follow-up visits, and advanced imaging.
- Collect copays and other payments and document transactions accurately.
- Verify insurance information and enter or update coverage details in the EHR.
- Complete medical-record requests by gathering and securely distributing the required documentation to the correct facility or authorized recipient.
- Report equipment or facility problems to the Practice Administrator.
- Perform other duties assigned by the Practice Administrator.
Required Qualifications
- Current Pennsylvania authorization or licensure required to perform diagnostic radiography.
- Completion of an accredited radiologic technology program.
- Current ARRT certification in Radiography, ARRT(R), if required by the practice.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of diagnostic imaging procedures and radiation-safety practices.
- Ability to perform orthopedic medical-assisting duties within applicable scope-of-practice requirements.
- Strong communication, organization, documentation, and patient-service skills.
- Ability to use an EHR, PACS, and standard office technology.
- Ability to protect confidential information and comply with HIPAA requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in orthopedics, sports medicine, urgent care, or an outpatient medical practice.
- Experience performing musculoskeletal radiographs.
- Experience with casting, cast removal, bracing, DME documentation, and procedure assistance.
- Medical assistant training or certification.
- Familiarity with insurance verification, appointment scheduling, and medical-record processing.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Ability to bend, reach, push, pull, and assist with patient positioning and transfers.
- Ability to operate radiographic equipment safely.
- Ability to lift and move supplies or equipment as required, with assistance or appropriate equipment when necessary.
- Ability to work safely around patients with acute injuries, impaired mobility, or postoperative limitations.

Work Environment
This is a full-time, in-person position in a busy orthopedic practice. The X-Ray Technologist / Medical Assistant works closely with physicians, physician assistants, clinical staff, and administrative personnel to provide efficient, respectful, and high-quality patient care.
