Full Job Description

This is a full-time, salaried position at 37.5 hours per week on-site split between the Berks History Center and Henry Janssen Library. A work-week is Tuesday through Saturday with occasional evening hours for events or other needs.

Pay: $60,000

New employees receive 2-weeks (or 75 hours) of PTO plus BHC Holidays.

After 90 days, employees are eligible for the BHC Health Insurance at no cost, or up to $500 cash-in-lieu of insurance.

Description:

The Collections Manager protects and preserves the museum object collection and library archives, prepares interpretive exhibits and programming, and assists the executive director in the oversight of facilities maintenance.

This position reports to the executive director and will assist in overseeing the part-time Processing Archivist and part-time Research Archivist; ensuring that all Library and Museum collections are properly accessioned, recorded into the Museum or Library software, and make the Archives accessible to BHC Members, and to the Public visitors doing research in-person and online. Additionally, this position will recruit and lead volunteers in proper accessioning techniques. In coordination with the executive director, they will also supervise and train any Museum Intern who is focusing on collections work.

Duties & Responsibilities Include:

Artifact evaluation, inventory and cataloging
Development and installation of museum exhibits & works with the executive director to plan and implement temporary exhibits that coordinate with special events or organizational marketing plans.
Physical Maintenance/Conservation of Collection
Collections duties such as; researching the artifact collection, identifying objects for acquisition and de-accession, preventative conservation, and facilities maintenance.
Registrar duties, including actively back-cataloging the BHC’s artifact collection, oversight of artifact acquisition and accessioning, management of all incoming and outgoing loans
Accepts donations of materials for consideration as potential accessions to the Collection, presents them to the Museum & Library Committee, and ensures the proper paperwork is completed and temporary custody standards are followed.
Serves as a liaison with the Museum & Library Committee, including facilitation of and record keeping for the BHC Museum Committee meetings
Processes new accessions with the Processing Archivist following archival standards.
Responsible for establishing inventory and cataloging priorities for the entire library and archival collections and implementing work plans to accomplish collections management goals
Respond to remote research requests and handle photograph reproduction requests, including scanning materials
Maintain the BHC Museum Collections Management Policy, Disaster Plan, Conservation Plan and other documents, as needed
Manages museum and library interns and volunteers
Assists with Front Desk duties; welcoming visitors, providing tours, as needed
And assists Executive Director and Staff with other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Library Science, Public History, or Museum Studies with coursework or educational experience in archives or collections care is preferred. However, hands-on, direct experience in the above field along with good references will definitely be considered.
Demonstrated interest in Berks County and US History.
Successful volunteer management experience is required.
Experience using a collections management system, such as PastPerfect.
Ability to use standard office equipment (i.e., copy machine), microfilm readers, and book scanners.
Ability to troubleshoot basic technology issues.
Knowledge of reference services in a research setting, especially archives and special collections.
Understanding of copyright regulations as they relate to library and archival materials.
Demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster a positive and collaborative work environment, effectively manage and resolve conflicts, and work with a diverse range of personalities.
Ability to work independently, as well as on a team often with competing deadlines.

Pay: $60,000.00 per year
