Full Job Description

Cascade Surgicenter is looking to add a Registered Nurse - Operating Room to our growing team of outstanding employees. Located in beautiful Bend, Oregon, Cascade Surgicenter (CSC) is the region’s premiere orthopedic and neurosurgery surgical center. The Registered Nurse - OR is responsible for nursing care to ensure the safety of the patient during their transfer and stay in the surgical suite.

Position Details

A. To utilize specialized nursing knowledge and discriminative judgment while providing direct and indirect patient care.

1) Performs assessment of patient for specific nursing care needed.

2) Plans care to ensure patient safety.

3) Directs and assists in carrying out safe aseptic techniques and procedures.

4) Supervises and directs the activities of non-professional personnel as necessary.

B. To perform the tasks delegated to the “circulating” role.

1) Check rooms for needed supplies and prepares rooms for specific patient and procedure.

2) Assists in transporting patient to OR and checks patient record for appropriate pre-op preparation and procedures (i.e., lab, x-ray, appropriate permits).

3) Performs and/or directs appropriate surgical prep.

4) Completes documentation for records, laboratory requisitions, and patient chart including medications and physician orders.

5) Directs proper care of instruments, surgical procedures, supplies, sterilization, and storage of equipment.

6) Supervises and assists with the proper, safe positioning of the patient.

7) Performs sponge and needle count. Instrument count when indicated. Maintains accurate documentation of count.

8) Identifies, labels, and cares for specimens properly.

9) Secures emergency equipment and supplies as needed.

10) Controls the general “tone” of the operating room.

11) Assist anesthesiologists as needed.

C. To perform the tasks of the “scrub” role (if applicable).

1) Scrub, gown and gloves members of the surgical team following aseptic techniques.

2) Sets up operating room with all necessary equipment and supplies.

3) Arranges instruments according to routine given procedure.

4) Handles instruments correctly and checks for cleanliness and proper working condition.

5) Maintains sterile field throughout surgical procedure.

6) Performs clean-up following procedures, as well as, general housekeeping duties.

7) Functions in the role of second assistant following successful skills demonstration.

D. To function effectively as a member of the surgical team.

1) Provides assistance to team members, physicians and anesthesia, personnel as needed (i.e., reliability, working relations, initiative, training needs).

2) Reviews physicians’ preference cards and updates as needed.

3) Assists in stocking, preparation, and waste management of supplies.

4) May be asked to help with unloading and distribution of incoming supplies.

5) Performs other duties as assigned.

E. To support quality activities.

1) Develops communication skills and promotes departmental relationships to ensure continuity of care

2) Participates in on-going committees and other educational programs to enhance patient care.

3) Maintains current CPR certification.

Qualifications

The Operating Room Staff Nurse must be a graduate of an accredited School of Nursing, currently licensed to practice nursing in the state of Oregon.
A minimum of one-year experience in the operating room is preferred.
Current BLS and ACLS certifications
Must be able to pass a background check and drug screen

Required Skills & Knowledge

The successful candidate must have the ability to work independently and well as function within a team; have the ability to assess patient needs, determine priorities, plan and direct care of the surgical patient; and possess the ability to handle stress.
Must have thorough knowledge of nursing theory and practice; knowledge of operating room technique; possess strong organizational skills and flexibility; present good communication skills; have the ability to assess priorities; present a professional image and be able to handle periods of stress.

Job Details

Full-time: Monday – Friday, 4 x 10-hour shifts, 7:00am – 5:30pm, variable mid-week day off

No nights or weekends

Physical Requirements

80% walking, standing, pushing, pulling, required to move patients. Potential exists for exposure to blood and body fluids, as well as, other hazardous materials. Personal protective equipment should be utilized as needed.
