Refugio County Memorial Hospital District is seeking an experienced and dedicated Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) to support nursing operations across our Critical Access Hospital. This leadership position works closely with the Director of Nursing to oversee patient care services, staff development, regulatory compliance, quality improvement initiatives, and day-to-day nursing operations.
The ADON serves as a key member of the nursing leadership team and may provide both administrative oversight and direct patient care as needed to ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality healthcare services.
Essential ResponsibilitiesNursing Leadership & Operations
- Support the Director of Nursing in managing daily nursing operations, staffing, scheduling, productivity, and patient flow.
- Serve as the nursing leader in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
- Provide guidance, mentorship, and support to nursing and patient care staff.
- Participate in leadership, quality, safety, medical staff, and interdisciplinary meetings.
- Assist with department goals, budgeting, staffing plans, and equipment needs.
- Collaborate with physicians, EMS, laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, rehabilitation, respiratory therapy, and referral facilities to coordinate patient care.
Clinical Oversight
- Support nursing services within the Emergency Department, Acute Care Unit, Outpatient Services, and Swing Bed Program.
- Assist with patient admissions, transfers, discharges, and stabilization of emergency patients.
- Make staffing and patient care decisions based on patient acuity and staff competencies.
- Respond to emergencies and high-risk patient situations.
- Provide direct patient care when necessary during staffing shortages or high-volume periods.
- Promote safe medication administration, infection prevention, fall prevention, wound care, and patient safety practices.
Staff Development & Management
- Assist with recruiting, interviewing, onboarding, orientation, and retention of nursing staff.
- Monitor staffing levels, attendance, overtime, and workforce productivity.
- Participate in employee coaching, counseling, performance evaluations, and corrective action processes.
- Conduct competency assessments and identify educational opportunities.
- Support ongoing staff development through in-services, simulations, drills, and continuing education.
Quality, Compliance & Regulatory Readiness
- Support compliance with CMS Critical Access Hospital Conditions of Participation, Texas regulations, accreditation standards, and hospital policies.
- Participate in Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.
- Review incidents, patient complaints, medication errors, infections, falls, and other quality indicators.
- Conduct chart audits and nursing documentation reviews.
- Assist with developing and monitoring corrective action plans.
- Maintain continuous survey readiness and support regulatory inspections.
Rural Health & Critical Access Hospital Responsibilities
- Coordinate stabilization and transfer of patients requiring a higher level of care.
- Collaborate with EMS, air medical services, referral centers, and community healthcare partners.
- Support telehealth and specialty referral programs.
- Participate in emergency preparedness planning and disaster response activities.
- Provide oversight and support for Swing Bed services, care planning, rehabilitation coordination, and discharge planning.
Patient & Community Engagement
- Address patient and family concerns in a professional and compassionate manner.
- Promote patient rights, privacy, informed consent, dignity, and culturally competent care.
- Support patient education, discharge planning, and community resource referrals.
- Participate in community health and wellness events as needed.
QualificationsRequired
- Current, unrestricted Texas Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Minimum of three years of nursing experience, preferably in acute care, emergency services, rural health, or critical access hospitals.
- Previous leadership experience as a Charge Nurse, House Supervisor, Nurse Manager, or similar role.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Preferred
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- ACLS, PALS, and TNCC certifications.
- Experience with Critical Access Hospital operations and CMS regulatory requirements.
- Knowledge of quality improvement, infection prevention, emergency preparedness, and nursing workforce management.
Schedule
- Full-time leadership position.
- Flexible schedule designed to provide nursing leadership coverage across departments.
- May include evenings, weekends, on-call responsibilities, and emergency response coverage as needed.

Pay: $37.24 - $46.50 per hour
