Title: Data Technician

$23.23 - $31.91 / Posted Thru: 8/20/2026

Location: Remote/Virtual – Occasional in-person at Lansing, MI office required - Must Live and Work in Michigan

Purpose: This Data Technician position is primarily responsible for: entering data into spreadsheets and databases, tracking data collected by community staff, tracking program and project level data, and serves as backup for sample collection scheduling. This position is responsible for the preparation of reports, charts, tables, graphics and maps associated with program and project level data. This position may be required to distribute other health education and communication materials; interfacing with local government, residents, and stakeholders. The person in this position will work closely with the Sanitarians, Unit Managers, Section Managers, local government officials, residents, and other partners.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Duty 1: Data Entry, Management, and Display (70%)

Retrieve and enter data into spreadsheets and databases in support of unit and section level programs and projects.
Ensure data is entered timely and accurately.
Assist with the development of spreadsheets and databases.
Display or otherwise assist with the display of data in charts, graphs, maps, or other graphics.
Develop or otherwise assist with the development of geodatabase layers.
Track or otherwise assist with tracking project level and program level data.

Duty 2: Report preparation (20%)

Create reports in the section data system as requested.
Assist in development of unit reports to disseminate appropriate program managers to summarize metrics and relevant programmatic data.
Provided timely and accurate updates to data tracking processes and management reporting requirements.
Complete or otherwise assist with the completion of time-sensitive reports and review of documents as assigned

Duty 3: Training and other duties. (10%)

Participate in web-based meetings and training as scheduled.
Complete any training required by MDHHS.
Develop and implement training as needed.
All other duties as assigned.
Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Education: Education typically acquired through completion of high school required. A Bachelor’s degree in public health, public administration, communications, program evaluation, environmental health, physical or biological sciences, sanitary science or a related field preferred.

Experience: One year of experience required. Experience/general knowledge in the drinking water industry, plumbing and other similar trades is preferred.

Important Skills and Characteristics:

Strong oral and written communication skills.
Self-motivated, able to complete work in a timely manner and handle multiple tasks at one time with minimal supervision.
Knowledge of the initiation, development, accomplishment, and evaluation of public programs or services.
Ability to analyze and assess operations from the standpoint of management controls, systems, and procedures.
Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers and external partners.
Ability to sit, stand, kneel. Office work may involve lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 40 lbs.
Some basic understanding or willingness to learn scientific principles, practices and procedures of toxicology, epidemiology, and biology. Basic understanding of data collection and security.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements: Primarily standard office environments with in-state travel needed to visit local health departments or community meetings.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORK OF OTHERS: No assigned responsibility.

IMPACT ON PROJECTS, SERVICES AND OPERATIONS: This position has a direct impact on the quality of services provided by MPHI to MDHHS. This position serves to support the Environmental Health Bureau, MDHHS. They will work in cooperation with technical subject-area experts within the bureau, in addition to external stakeholders, to track and improve response protocols and manage logistics. This individual will also support the implementation of these projects under guidance of senior workers.
